Stanford's Medical Center Development office seeks experienced candidates for a senior director position to lead and manage the faculty-supporting major gift officers within the department. The major gift officers and their managers will report to the Senior Director, Specialists and will raise funds for the School of Medicine and adult hospital (Stanford Health Care) strategic priorities.

This position serves as a leader within the Major Gifts Team overseeing a team of managers who, in turn work with prospects and faculty and oversee major gift officer teams. Currently, we have 4 managers and 14 MGOs who will report to this new leadership role. The Major Gifts leadership team (including this position) reports to the Associate Dean, Stanford Medicine, who reports to the AVP, Stanford Medicine.


The Senior Director will lead a strong and sophisticated team of 3-5 managers, each overseeing 5 “specialist” fundraisers (~20 in total) focused on securing gifts of $250,000+ and creating and implementing the strategic fundraising goals for two to three program areas. These “specialist” fundraisers will each have a portfolio of 50 active major or principal rated prospects and work directly with faculty overseeing an initiative (e.g., our biomedical innovation building fundraising strategy) or a clinical department with grateful patient prospects (e.g., Department of Orthopedics). Thus, each specialist fundraiser is tasked with creating strategic fundraising plans for their areas, including plans to grow prospect base, partner with “generalist” fundraisers across Stanford, determine inspiring gift opportunities and create strategies for engaging donors overall for their area. The Senior Director will guide the collective efforts of the specialist fundraisers and coordinate with his/her colleagues on the Major Gifts Leadership Team, Principal Gifts Team and wider campus community. The Senior Director will also hold a portfolio of 25 active major or principal rated prospects. Each manager role in Stanford's Office of Development is also an active fundraising role.

The Senior Director will also ensure appropriate skills and resources (research, grateful patient flow, communications, events, and stewardship) are allocated toward programs, resolve internal allocation issues, maintain focus on higher potential/high return donors and shared team goals. The Senior Director is responsible for fundraising projections, shared planning with partner teams, and ensuring that faculty served by specialist MGOs are well supported. The Senior Director is accountable for results within a complex, highly collaborative and donor-focused environment.

Lead development efforts and execution of fundraising goals within MCD, with special focus on the work of major gift officers who are assigned to fundraise with faculty.


* Oversee the strategic direction of all specialist fundraising teams for MCD

* Lead faculty engagement efforts for MCD and serve as a strong leadership partner for the Grateful Patient Program as it evolves in MCD

* Provide strategy, leadership and direction that have a broad scope and impact for Medical Center Development.

* Oversee the feasibility process for new initiatives, in partnership with MCD leaders.

* Work with staff, volunteers, and faculty to develop goals, scope resources and feasibility and achieve fundraising goals. Teach others to do so.

* Provide opportunities for professional growth to increase capacity and stability of the team.

* Inspire and motivate staff by fostering a work environment that encourages new ideas, risk-taking, team-based efforts, celebrating current achievements and setting/meeting philanthropic goals, listening and taking feedback.

* Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.

* Ensure appropriate resources are allocated towards programs, resolve internal allocation issues and maintain focus on high potential/high return donors.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience and management experience preferably in an educational institution or nonprofit or a combination of education and relevant experience. Strongly prefer experience in major gift fundraising in addition to grateful patient fundraising and experience in complex, sophisticated fundraising environments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrated fundraising experience, sensitivity, and diplomacy.
* Excellent judgment, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to lead and motivate others and earn the respect of associates at all levels.
* Strategic skills to craft and help implement fundraising plans, including strategic planning, scoping, feasibility, campaign planning.
* Demonstrated managerial talent in guiding and optimizing major gifts efforts.
* Expertise in guiding faculty leaders and staffing senior leaders.
* Proven ability to meet fundraising goals with a strong track record in managing and balancing donor and faculty relationships.
* Ability to manage a large number of fundraising activities simultaneously.
* Strong and proven verbal and written communication skills. (Writing samples required)
* Demonstrated experience recruiting, evaluating, mentoring, growing, and inspiring staff members.
* Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals, including strong volunteer management skills.

Certifications and Licenses:

* Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
* Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
