Nature of Work:
The Schwartz/Yang Lab seeks a highly energetic, self-motivated individual to join our laboratory. We are seeking a full-time Professional Research Assistant to work at the Schwartz/Yang Lab in the Pulmonary Division on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.
This position is supervised by Ivana Yang, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine
Examples of Work Performed:
The research in the Schwartz/Yang Lab focuses on understanding Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis - a chronic and progressive disease characterized by a rapid decline in lung function. Our work focuses on the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that contribute to disease progression. The hired individual will primarily manage a biobank of over 40,000 human samples. These samples will be used for large scale projects including next generation sequencing, whole genome sequencing, RNA-seq, genomewide association studies (GWAS), and genome-wide epigenetic analysis. The primary goal of these projects is to identify disease associated genes which are then followed up on with mechanistic studies in mice and cell culture. Necessary skills for this position include excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and effective communication skills. A strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required and prior database experience is preferred. Prior laboratory experience is also required.

A bachelor's degree in a biological science is required along with one to five years of experience as a research technician in a laboratory setting.
Proficiency in the following areas is highly desirable: Basic laboratory skills including nucleic acid extractions and simple programing in Microsoft Excel. Previous database and biobanking experience is desired, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The individual hired for this position will primarily work with human samples acquired from hospitals located around the globe to support our research on pulmonary fibrosis. Required skills for this position include basic molecular biology techniques including, but not limited to, DNA/RNA extractions, quality control of nucleic acids, and genotyping. The person hired will also be responsible for accurately cataloging and organizing these samples across several databases and regularly reporting on the numbers of samples, categorized by different criteria. Finally, in collaboration with physicians in the lab and our clinical coordinator, the hired individual will help to identify and distribute samples to large scale sequencing centers for further analysis. The applicant must have good analytical and problem solving skills as well as a desire to learn new techniques.
