Position Summary

The mission of the department of Kinesiology (KIN) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is to prepare professionals at both the undergraduate and graduate levels through excellence in teaching, research, and service so they may encourage enhanced performance and quality of life of all citizens of the Piedmont Triad and beyond through active lifestyles and lifetime physical activity.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has funded a two year multi-site project to develop a smartphone app for concussion testing. One postdoc will be housed in Dr. Christopher Rhea's Virtual Environment for Assessment and Rehabilitation Laboratory (VEAR Lab) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). A second postdoc will be housed in Dr. Geoffrey Wright's Motion Analysis and Perception (MAP) Lab at Temple University. The two postdocs will be responsible for recruiting and testing civilian and military healthy and concussed populations on a series of balance tests, including the use of an in-house developed smartphone app. While each postdoc will be housed in their primary lab, they will have the opportunity to make visits to the other university in order to experience both UNCG and Temple's research environments. The postdocs will also be responsible for collecting data at a military site in Bethesda, MD.

OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Creating, implementing and problem solving all aspects of balance testing methods;
  • Independently researching on best practices and the newest technology;
  • Independently coordinating the day-to-day laboratory based research activities for the project;
  • Advising the Primary Investigator (PI) and Project Coordinator (PC) on choices related to methods chosen;
  • Designing lab operations/procedures/troubleshooting/decision making on any issues related to balance testing;
  • Managing laboratory safety issues and training students and staff in best practices related to laboratory methods;
  • Managing data in consultation with the PI;
  • Conducting data analyses used for research publication;
  • Coordinating all laboratory related tasks in consultation with the PC;
  • Training graduate/undergraduate student workers in balance testing, data management, and data analysis;
  • Reporting progress on the project to the research team at bi-weekly investigator meetings;
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The review of applications will start on June 15, 2015 and the position will remain open until filled. The desired starting date is mid-Summer 2015.

CITI certification for the ethical treatment of research participants is needed, but may be completed as part of job training.



Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD specializing in biomechanics, motor behavior, sports medicine, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or closely related field
  • Experience in collecting data in a kinesiology or related field, laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of word processing software (Word, Power Point, Excel; including data set creation
  • Experience supervising post-doctoral research associates and graduate/undergraduate students

REQUIRED SKILLS NEEDED:

  • Ability to work accurately and independently
  • Ability to manage a large federally funded research project
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Research experience and leadership skills


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in large-scale data collection/management/analysis, SPSS, MATLAB, smartphone app development, virtual reality development, gait analysis, and/or balance analysis and/or laboratory management
  • Experience with laboratory safety regulations, operational management procedures, and creation/design/implementation of quality assurance
  • Balance Testing experience
  • Prior experience conducting concussion research
