PURPOSE:

Under the  general supervision of  the  Associate  Director of  Information Systems (IS), the  Database Administrator is responsible for providing technical support for the analysis, development, installation, administration, and maintenance of mission critical enterprise systems, databases and middleware applications. This position performs system backup and recovery, performance tuning and monitoring, capacity monitoring and planning, troubleshooting and resolving problems, and providing technical coordination for finding solutions and implementing projects.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Maintains and monitors databases and applications to ensure quality of overall system performance and availability.
  2. Installs new, modified or third party software releases and/or updates.
  3. Develops and maintains backup and recovery procedures and documentation for application or system failures.
  4. Works with users to design, develop and test programs and interfaces to ensure overall system performance.
  5. Analyzes user system and application needs, determine and evaluate alternative solutions and approaches to meeting those needs, and proposes the optimal technology solutions.
  6. Consults with users to identify and document software/system purpose, work flow issues, output needs and to determine overall functional and technical system requirements and specifications.
  7. Develops and maintains technical documentation for systems and customizations.
  8. Assists IS and cross-functional/technical teams in requirements gathering, coordination and implementation of new campus systems and projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: Enterprise systems, applications, and technical standards; Linux/UNIX operating systems, database productivity tools including Oracle Enterprise Manager, SQL, SQL*Plus, PL/SQL, and SQL*Loader; technical and vendor documentation and ability to maintain internal documentation; system development life cycle and structured systems development concepts; system capability, design restrictions, and security requirements; client/server technologies, network connectivity, integration, configuration, and protocols.

Ability to: apply consultative skills to assess user needs and communicate technology systems and solutions; maintain databases and middleware applications through performance tuning and applying patches/fixes/upgrades; develop program implementation plans, install software, and apply fixes; identify hardware/software interface problems; perform interactive debugging and to test and analyze program failures; use systems work flow and logic flowchart techniques; use project management tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

A Bachelor's degree in information technology or a related field with five years of related experience, or a Master's degree in a directly related field with a minimum of three years of related experience. Experience in SQL and at least one industry standard object oriented programming language.  Ability to work within a team or independently, demonstrating strong personal initiative and ability to work reliably with minimal supervision and to communicate and collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and members of the community in one-to-one or group settings. Demonstrated record of a strong customer service orientation with a high level of planning and organizational skills, including the ability to follow through on assigned tasks and to complete projects on time.  Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position, including the knowledge and abilities identified above. A basic foundation of knowledge and skills in database management, applications packages and programming, systems analysis and related programming support functions is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science or business, or equivalent training and applied experience.  Working knowledge of industry standard applications programming languages and knowledge of standard systems analysis techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working in higher education. Knowledge of Oracle Middleware Applications and Web services. Experience with Oracle/PeopleSoft tools, technology and architecture; Data Warehouse and reporting tools; web and mobile development tools for user interface.  Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision

Occasional evenings and/or weekend work may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  Requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations. 

SALARY:
