Delaware County Community College, a competency-based institution, committed to diversity invites applications for an Assistant Dean, STEM in our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics division.

The Assistant Dean reports to the Academic Division Dean, assists the Dean in the academic, administrative, personnel, and fiscal operations of the Division, and acts in the Dean’s place during an absence. The Assistant Dean’s primary area of responsibility is with the Division’s part-time faculty, specifically in their recruitment, hiring, course staffing, supervision, staff development, evaluation and resolution of student concerns.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assist the Dean and provide leadership in specific projects related to the following operations of the Division; Academic: Develop and implement the Division’s academic plan; ensure the academic integrity of all courses and program; monitor the assessment and review all courses and programs to assure their integrity, currency, and relevance to student achievement; collaborate with faculty in creating new courses and programs as needed; advise the dean in regard to the division’s academic assessment activities; Administrative: Develop a course schedule that is based on students’ needs; prepare reports and serve on committees as needed; monitor full-time and part-time faculty load, track enrollment, and make class cancellation recommendations prior to the start of each semester; Personnel: Advocate for faculty and staff; mentor and facilitate professional development of faculty, particularly of part-time faculty; assure that part-time faculty are cognizant of and engaged in achieving the goals of the division; Fiscal Operations: Develop and monitor a fiscally sound budget, and seek additional funding sources; Science Laboratories:  In collaboration with the Science Supervisor, supervise the academic science & engineering laboratories on all DCCC campuses, in both Delaware and Chester Counties, to ensure that the faculty have the materials and equipment necessary to meet the laboratory competencies of their courses in a safe, clean, and neat environment.  Work collaboratively with the Science Supervisor in the supervision, hiring, training, staff development, and evaluation of the Laboratory Coordinators.  Support the Science Supervisor in their role as Chemical Hygiene Officer. In collaboration with the Dean, Senior Laboratory Coordinator, and Discipline Coordinators, provide primary leadership to the part-time faculty in their; Recruitment: Maintain a current file of qualified potential part-time faculty, advertise vacancies, evaluate written credentials of applicants, and identify suitable candidates to interview, according to established practices and policies; Hiring: Interview and hire new candidates for part-time positions, according to established practices and policies; Course Staffing: Assign part-time faculty to teaching assignments based upon staffing needs, according to established practices and policies; Supervision: Act as the first-line supervisor of the part-time faculty, in terms of their attendance, classroom teaching, student complaints, and the performance of their other duties; Staff Development: Plan and provide staff development programs for part-time faculty, particularly during regularly scheduled in-service days; Evaluation: Regularly evaluate the classroom performance of part-time faculty, according to established practices and policies; Student Concerns: Address student needs and concerns regarding part-time faculty and facilitate the collaborative resolution of conflicts; Evaluation: Assistant Deans will be involved in annual review process. Additional reviews will occur as needed; Additional Employment: The Assistant Dean’s position is considered a full-time position. Assistant Deans wishing to engage in part-time teaching or consultation activities must obtain prior approval from the Dean in consultation with the Provost.

The ideal candidate must have a Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) discipline; doctorate preferred; Teaching experience, preferably at least 5 years, in science, engineering technology, engineering, or mathematics at the community college level; Demonstrated successful academic administrative experience, preferably at least 3 years; Evidence of effective communication, organizational, and leadership skills; Commitment to the community college philosophy and student centered learning.
