Essential functions of this position:
Serve as Undersea Vehicle Operator, ROV technician, and deck support on assigned research missions. This position will spend 80-100 days traveling per year typically in 2-3 week duration’s. This position is time-limited with the possibility of continuation pending availability of funds and department need.
Duties include: organizing, planning, coordinating, and supervising personnel, equipment, and procedures used during research diving missions. Specific duties include the following:
Ensuring the safe conduct of diving operations and the strict adherence to all applicable regulations and procedures.
Coordinating activities with other shipboard personnel including Vessel Captain and the Principal Investigator.
Assisting scientists in the accomplishment of research tasks including: data collection and storage, measuring and documenting, video and still photography, sampling and collecting, monitoring, and observing.
Performing on-site scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on ROV and AUV equipment. Operate and maintain the Program’s ROVs, AUV, and peripheral equipment. Process and document navigational tracking, oceanographic data, video, and digital still photo data into a format that is easily manipulated and user friendly for the science team.
N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be
received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Experience working offshore for extended periods
General troubleshooting experience is important, especially with marine electronics
General knowledge of remotely operated vehicles
Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
Graduate from a 2-year marine technical college and 2 years of general marine research experience preferably with supervision; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Familiarity with a variety of the research field concepts, practices and procedures
Computer troubleshooting skills are a big plus
Demonstrated experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Passport is a plus
Recruitment Range: $43,082 - $45,255
NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 67
Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
Months Per Year: 12 Months
Work Days: Monday - Friday when not offshore
Work Hours: 8:00AM - 5:00PM when not offshore
