Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Rehabilitation, the Speech Pathologist assesses, evaluates and plans treatments for residents of the Long Island State Veterans Home. The Speech Pathologist functions as a resource for other allied health workers and attends interdisciplinary team meetings to coordinate goals and treatment plans. The Speech Pathologist determines restorative potential and integrates Speech Therapy goals with those of other disciplines.

Duties of a TH CTS Speech Pathologist II may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Provides clinical services in Speech Language and Dysphagia to Long Island State Veterans Home residents.
  • Reviews referral information.
  • Interviews residents, staff and families and records history of communication and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Applies tests and informal measures to describe speech, language and overall communication abilities and/or swallowing function.
  • Evaluates data in terms of diagnostic, prognostic and rehabilitative relevance.
  • Completes appropriate evaluation reports.
  • Obtains doctor's orders for treatment when indicated.
  • Provides treatment when indicated.
  • Interacts with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, and unit staff.
  • Maintains accurate and timely recordkeeping.
  • Orders supplies within budget guidelines.
  • Provides in-services to staff on relevant topics in Speech Therapy.
Working Conditions:

Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited school. NYS Licensure. Preferred Qualifications: Two years' experience in Speech-Language Pathology. Special Notes: The Long Island State Veterans Home is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on our 25-acre campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises. The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department, clear a background investigation; submit three (3) written references, and provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s), if applicable.
