The School of Education (SOE) at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for the position of Associate Dean of Research. The successful applicant will join a diverse, active research community to: (a) provide leadership and organizational support for the Office of Research, (b) facilitate support for all forms of scholarly work in the SOE, © plan, manage, and grow external funding to support scholarly work, and (d) recognize and strategically disseminate scholarly work conducted in the SOE. This individual will advance research collaborations and engagement within the SOE, across the university, and with local, state, national, and international organizations, nurturing environments that promote research at the interface of different disciplines. The Associate Dean of Research will identify new research opportunities that have potential for significant growth, liaise with Departments within and outside of the SOE on associated grant and contract submissions, and prepare the SOE faculty case for University investment in additional resources required to grow the School's research capacity and increase its reach and impact. We seek an entrepreneurial individual who has the vision and expertise to maximize opportunities for innovative research and can strengthen the SOE's research support infrastructure to ensure that effective and efficient administrative procedures and policies related to research are established and maintained. This individual will have the opportunity to maintain her or his own research program while also serving as a research mentor to faculty members who seek guidance.
The University is located in Greensboro, a city of over 282,000 in a metropolitan area of 1.6 million people. The University has the most diverse student population in the UNC system, with more than 19,000 full-time students, including 3,000 graduate students. UNCG is Carnegie-designated as an R2 Doctoral University with higher research activity. The School of Education currently has 39 active awards totaling $3.4 million, with an average award total of $3.2 million per year over the past three years. Proposal submission activity has averaged 37 proposals per year over the past three years.
The SOE includes the following Departments: Counseling and Educational Development, Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations, Educational Research Methodology, Library and Information Studies, Specialized Education Services, and Teacher Education and Higher Education. The School has a prominent standing at UNCG, given the University's history as a Women's College. The SOE's core purpose is to change lives through advancing access to life's opportunities. Four areas of distinction guide progress towards fulfilling the School's core purpose: provide transformative learning, bridge research and practice, promote equity and diversity, and engage community. SOE faculty have active research agendas focused on one or more of these areas of distinction, and the Associate Dean of Research will work toward advancing research in these four areas.
An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines in the SOE or a related field; Demonstrated record of scholarship that merits a tenured faculty appointment as an associate or full professor in one SOE Department; A commitment to social justice and serving diverse communities; Demonstrated systems thinker and problem solver with excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills; Evidence of an established record of grant-funding and successful research mentorship; Demonstrated experience with budget management and supervising professional staff; Values multiple types of research paradigms, varied methodologies, and community-engaged scholarship.
Successful experience in an academic administrative position; experience designing and leading interdisciplinary research initiatives, building research management policy, and infrastructure; Established record of successfully growing a research and/or organizational unit; Knowledge of a wide-range of funding opportunities, including evidence of securing federally-funded projects and connecting with foundations and other external entities.
