Job Purpose

The Program Manager will work with the Director of Finance, Operations and Grants Management to support scholar programming and faculty research led by Stanford PACS Faculty Co-Director Woody Powell. Under the guidance of the Director of Finance, Operations and Grants Management, the Program Manager will participate in the development and implementation of marketing initiatives, enabling programs, services, and events to meet business objectives.

Prof. Powell leads the annual Stanford PACS Junior Scholars Forum which brings together newer researchers, including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, working in the general areas of civil society, the nonprofit sector, and philanthropy to increase the sense of intellectual community and enhance the overall quality of research. Along with Patricia Bromley, Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Education, Prof. Powell will also begin work on the third volume of The Nonprofit Sector: A Research Handbook in FY 2016-17. The first edition of the Handbook was published in 1987. It covered all aspects of the philanthropic sector from that period and is regarded by many as being relevant to the study of the sector even today. The second edition was published in 2006. It broadened the scope to cover international dimensions of the sector. The third edition aims to cover new models of philanthropy that have emerged in the 21st century and a host of other new activities associated with civic action. The Program Manager will provide marketing, co-ordination and outreach support on both these projects.

In FY 2016-17 Prof. Powell is launching the next phase of the Stanford Project on the Evolution of Nonprofits (SPEN). SPEN brings a unique sociological perspective to the study of nonprofit management and seeks to equip nonprofit and foundation leaders with a better understanding of the characteristics and behaviors of nonprofit organizations and to inform decision making within and about the sector. The Program Manager will provide strategic, operational and communications support to this research initiative.

Additionally, the Program Manager will support the Stanford PACS PhD Fellows program and Small Grants Program.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • Recommend and execute marketing strategies to meet business objectives.
  • Manage marketing plans/programs to meet business objectives, including collaboration with internal stakeholders and vendor partners.
  • Implement integrated marketing communications and brand strategy, across a variety of channels (i.e., digital and print).
  • Oversee design and production of marketing materials from inception to deployment.
  • Conduct market research, including competitive benchmarking, and analyze program/event effectiveness used to inform decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting.
  • Assess market opportunities and track market trends. Recommend marketing improvements based on findings.
  • Plan and execute events to support marketing objectives.
  • Manage vendors/consultants on specific projects.
  • Manage project/program budget(s) and coordinate invoice processing.
  • May oversee interns and other contingent staff; provide staff training.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Previous experience in product, program and/or services marketing.
  • Ability to drive cross-functional groups toward a common goal.
  • Experience with project management and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Understands how to implement integrated marketing programs across channels including digital and print.
  • Experience with market research and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated problem solver.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
  • Masters' degree in Social Sciences.
  • Knowledge of and experience in philanthropy/social sector.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with minimal guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Ability to work with human study participants.
  • Supervisory skills.

Certifications and Licenses:

None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.
