Full-time, 100%, 12-month, renewable appointment. Primary responsibilities will include teaching and coaching the intercollegiate meats and animal evaluation judging teams and leading the coordination of meats extension and outreach activities. Initial appointments are typically at the rank of Instructor, Lecturer, Teaching Assistant Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor. Senior level appointment to Sr. Instructor/Lecturer or Teaching/Clinical Associate Professor or Teaching/Clinical Professor may be available for candidates with significant additional experience, stature and demonstrated experience.


This position will coach the intercollegiate meats judging team and co-coach the intercollegiate meat animal evaluation team. They will teach the courses associated with those teams and potentially other meat science and production animal science courses. This position will be expected to participate in the national intercollegiate meats judging committee and cultivate meat judging alumni relationships to advance the Meats Judging program of the University of Illinois. Coordination of various youth activities related to meats and livestock judging, such as contests, carcass shows and workshops, is also expected. Additionally, this position will serve as technical advisor to the Illinois Association of Meat Processors. They will be expected to design and implement an outreach program to meat producers in the State of Illinois including training programs and demonstrations. This position will be an integral member of the Meat Science program and be expected to collaborate in fulfilling the mission of teaching, research and extension as part of the Meat Science faculty. As such, they may be asked to assume additional related responsibilities to enhance the mission of the department

Given the physical nature of the role of a meats judging coach, when working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may frequently weigh up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally weigh up to seventy-five (75) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements. Required: Graduate degree in Animal Science or related field with a specialization in Meat Science required. Individuals working toward a degree may be considered, but the degree must be obtained by the starting date.

Individuals with an MS degree may be appointed as Instructor. PhD required for Lecturer, Clinical Professorial or Teaching Professorial positions.


Required: Meats judging experience. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and leadership potential commensurate with position sought. Knowledge of meat animal production and processing, carcass fabrication and meat grading. The ability to work efficiently in a team environment. Excellent organizational skills. Good oral and written communication skills.

Preferred: Coaching experience in meats judging. Proficiency in carcass fabrication and further processing. Experience planning youth or producer outreach activities.
