The School of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a tenure-ineligible position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor to serve as Executive Director (ED) of Outreach for the Systems and Information Engineering (SIE) in the department in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. In addition to the traditional on-grounds advanced degree programs, the SIE offers degree and certificate programs designed for working professionals and others who prefer to earn an advanced degree or certificate without becoming a residential student. Rank is commensurate with experience.
The ED is responsible for program development, program management and oversight, and academic oversight of all outreach programs. The ED provides leadership and direction for professional development and continuing education programs in systems engineering and reports to the Department Chair and supervises a Program Manager and Administrative Assistant. As part of the leadership team, the ED will also participate in strategic planning and the formulation of long range plans to meet the educational outreach missions of the SIE Department.
The successful applicant must have a PhD in systems engineering, a minimum of 5 years teaching experience at the university level, a minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience, well-developed oral and written communication, a proven ability to analyze and interpret data and use it for process improvements and decision making, experience designing and delivering educational programs, an entrepreneurial mindset, the ability to work with a highly diverse clientele and an ability to work collaboratively with academic leadership, state licensing boards, professional organizations and other external partners.
The incumbent must have the ability to understand budgeting and financial management methods including revenue and cost tracking, variance tracking, and reconciliation. Preference will be given to candidates with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and self-confidence to interact effectively with faculty and staff, working professionals, and industry sponsors. Preferred candidates have deep understanding of systems analysis, systems thinking, and systems engineering methods and ability to communicate this understanding across a wide range of domains and disciplines. The ability to develop and implement effective marketing programs and strategies to target and attract prospective qualified students to certificate and degree programs is preferred
