Degree and Area of Specialization: PhD or equivalent in health policy, health services research, public health, epidemiology, economics, behavioral or social science, or other closely related fields.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: 1+ years of post-doctoral training preferred in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, behavioral health, health disparities, Alzheimer's disease and dementia research, or comparable area.
Position Summary: The University of Wisconsin, Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics seeks a candidate to join the health services research program led by Amy Kind, MD, PhD. Dr. Kind's research is focused broadly on improving the health and quality of life of patients and caregivers through high-impact transformational research on care policy, processes and outcomes, and rigorous development, testing and dissemination of pioneering medical care models. The incumbent will serve as a scientist in Dr. Kind's program, providing support for the program's varied scientific and analytic activities. The incumbent will work with the various members of Dr. Kind's research team and collaborators to conduct statistical analysis of cutting-edge health services research studies to address significant public health and clinical research questions. The incumbent will also identify research problems and collaborate in the design and implementation of new studies for the team.
Additional Information: The UW Department of Medicine maintains several well-funded research programs, ranking it in the top 20 of academic departments of medicine with respect to total amount of NIH funding. The UW Division of Geriatrics within the Department of Medicine is a nationally recognized program with expertise in aging research, education, and clinical services for the elderly. Comprising 36 faculty members, the division supports widely acknowledged research programs in Alzheimer's disease, cancer and aging, caloric restriction, falls, osteoporosis, sleep disorders in the elderly, older women's health, transitional care and health services research. Together, these programs have attracted substantial research funding from several federal and non-federal sources, including NIH and VA, currently exceeding $59 million. The Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC), the first geriatrics-based P50/NIA funded Center in the country, provides substantial expertise and infrastructure for UW investigators and trainees to conduct research in all aspects of Alzheimer's disease. In addition to the ADRC, the Division supports several other academic institutes and centers, including the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) of the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, the NIA-funded Wisconsin Institute of Healthy Aging, the Center for Women's Health Research, and the Community Academic Aging Research Network. The Division-supported clinical activities are closely aligned with those of various research programs.
The successful applicant will have demonstrated quantitative research skills, experience working with large datasets typically used to conduct health services research (e.g. Medicare claims and electronic medical records datasets), excellent verbal and written communication skills, a scientific publication track record, an interest in building a health policy research portfolio, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Experience in qualitative research skills, implementation science and/or evaluation methodology is also valued but not required. In addition to quantitative research skills, the successful applicant will also demonstrate competence in standard office productivity software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
