Requisition Title: Associate / Full Professor - Translational Medicine Research - 1700555

The Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is seeking a dynamic research leader for the position of Head, Translational Medicine Research Program. Research in this program aims to understand complex, integrated bodily systems to bridge in vitro approaches with in vivo applications, preclinical models of human disease and translate these findings into human health. With a bidirectional focus on human disease, advanced physiologic, biologic, metabolic and imaging tools, as well as therapeutics, are developed and applied to transform clinical approaches to child health. Understanding disease mechanisms will allow for the development of diagnostic testing, novel therapeutic agents and biomarkers for disease monitoring. It is expected that candidates will have an international reputation as a researcher, in one of these areas.

The Translational Medicine Research Program is entering a pivotal and exciting time, poised to play a catalyst role in fostering greater and more critical links -- between basic discovery research, populations and outcomes - with established SickKids partners in our Centres, Hospital Divisions/Departments, additional Research Programs, and provincial health systems and programs.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, MD or equivalent, and proven research leadership excellence. Wherein an MD, the successful candidate will have obtained an appropriate Certificate of Registration from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (license to practice), and appropriate VISA, if applicable. The Program Head will collaborate with senior leaders and be responsible for the overall scope, focus and direction of research within the program, and will play an advisory role in developing and implementing scientific priorities within the Research Institute to ensure SickKids remains at the forefront of the disciplines represented in the program. The Program Head will also work with the other Program Heads to establish inter-programmatic projects, to promote information sharing and to maximize use of resources.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Senior Scientist in the Research Institute and would be expected to qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level (status only) in the appropriate department at the University of Toronto. The Program Head role is a five-year appointment, with the potential to renew this leadership role for a further 5-years following a successful Program review.

The Translational Medicine Research Program is located in the state-of-the-art Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, located in the Discovery District in the heart of downtown Toronto. The Translational Medicine Program consists of 55 investigators and over 300 graduate and postdoctoral trainees and staff, offering a unique environment for medical science discoveries with nine teaching and research hospitals and the University of Toronto, Canada's largest university, in close proximity. SickKids is a fully affiliated Hospital with the University of Toronto. SickKids researchers benefit from the extensive research facilities of the University and its affiliated institutions. Visit our site to learn more about the Translational Medicine Program.

Interested applicants should e-mail their application (Curriculum Vitae, research plan, leadership experience and vision) preferably in PDF format, to Dr. Michael Salter, Chief of Research, at by May 1, 2017.

The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
