Job Description

Reporting to the Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), the temporary Pre-Award Specialist is responsible for proposal preparation, development and submission of grant proposals to external sponsors. As a member of an active pre-award team, the Pre-Award Specialist provides high-quality customer-service driven support to MSU faculty and staff in the preparation and submission of their grant proposals, including the preliminary review of sponsor requirements, and preparation of budgets and forms according to the guidelines established by MSU, federal uniform guidance, and sponsors.

Duties Performed:
•Provide support to MSU faculty (MSU researchers and program staff) in the submission of proposals, and entering of proposal information into required submission (i.e., CAYUSE, Fastlane, etc.) and financial systems.
•Provide front-line support to faculty and staff in the preparation of proposals, including determining sponsor requirements, and preparation of budgets and forms according to the guidelines established by MSU, the federal Uniform Guidance, Federal Cost Accounting Standards, and sponsor guidelines.
•Prepare supplementary proposal documents with moderate supervision, ensuring proposals are complete before being submitted to the sponsor.
•Review proposals for compliance issues.
•Reviews program announcements and, with moderate direction, determines pertinent proposal requirements.
•Communicate guidelines and proposal requirements to Principal Investigators.
•Prepare proposal revisions and responds to requests related to proposal submissions.
•Coordinate with ORSP staff, researchers, department/unit heads, deans, directors and other staff to resolve proposal issues, and provides information as requested.
•Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications & Requirements

Required Education and Experience:
•Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•Experience in pre-award sponsored research administration.
Preferred Education and Experience:
•Proficiency with proposal budget development.
•Experience in a university or non-profit setting.
Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
•Ability to meet proposal deadlines with demonstrated tact, poise and professionalism.
•Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
•Proofreading skills.
•Experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
•Attention to detail, and ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others under pressure.
Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
•Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel in a Windows environment.
•Knowledge of scientific terminology, experience in preparing contract and grant budgets.
•Experience with the CAYUSE 424 S2S submission system and/or Grants.Gov, NSF Fastlane, NIH COMMONS, and other electronic proposal submission systems.
•Experience working in a deadline driven position.
•Personal or professional experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.



Salary Range
This position will be limited to 25 hours per week at a rate of $30 per hour.
