Overview

As a member of our site protection staff, reporting to the Supervisor of Inspection & Testing, and working collaboratively with other University departments, the Site Protection Life Safety Technicians is responsible for the comprehensive inspection, testing, and related repairs to the Universities Life Safety System, including but not limited to fire, sprinkler, standpipe systems, fire pumps, and emergency broadcast towers, kitchen hood systems, special hazard systems, fire extinguishers. The technician will assume responsibility for all the documentation related to these inspections.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


  • Testing, Inspections, Maintenance and Repairs



-Perform testing, inspections, maintenance and repairs of life safety systems. Ensure a high level of quality, efficient, code compliant work. Life safety systems include but are not limited to fire, sprinkler, standpipe systems, fire pumps, kitchen hood systems, special hazard systems, fire extinguishers and emergency broadcast towers. Testing, and inspections of systems will be performed in accordance with (NFPA) guidelines as adopted into code by the state and local municipalities.



- Ensures that testing activities are performed safely and comply with University and OSHA safety standards and practices.

Work with our computerized maintenance system (Maximo) and field inspection programs to receive and generate work orders

  • Support and administrative



-Assist Site Protection's Testing & Inspection Supervisor, Scheduler Planner and, Life Safety System Testing & Inspection Program Coordinator with data collection on new and renovation projects.



-As necessary, carry out shop work assignments and assist tradesmen with critical and urgent shop tasks. Attend department approved safety and technical training. Assist in other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:



Possess a valid Certification for Backflow Prevention Device Inspector/Tester from an approved agency or be able to attain certification within 1 year.
  • Possess a high school diploma (or GED) and technical education related to the inspection, troubleshooting, and repairs of Life Safety Systems.
  • Must possess 3 or more years of full-time work experience in the testing, inspection, maintenance and repairs of Life Safety Systems.
  • Possess excellent and broad-based working knowledge of fire codes such as NFPA 80, 70,72,13,20 and 25, along with the International Fire Code.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods associated with inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, and operation of all systems noted above; thorough knowledge of safety regulations and safe work practices; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a diverse audience, and possess a knowledge of appropriate escalation protocols and political acumen; understanding of modern customer service theories, practices and methods, and how to apply them.
  • Must be familiar with the use of a computerized maintenance-management software program;
  • Must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents as needed, and on short notice;
  • Essential Personnel - must be able to function in an essential personnel role, which may include an extended on-campus presence, as defined in the University's (Core Essential Policy);
  • Must have a valid driver's license.





PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Possess NICET Fire Alarm or Sprinkler Testing & Inspections level 1 or higher certification.
  • Hold a current New Jersey certification as licensed Fire Alarm System or Fire Suppression Mechanic.



The final candidate will be required to complete a background check and a post-offer pre-employment physical successfully.

  • possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
  • Will be required to work on and around live electrical equipment, AC and DC. Will also be required to work around rotating machinery and other mechanical systems.
