The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia (UVa) seeks candidates for multiple open rank, tenure and tenure-track faculty positions as part of the Multiscale Multifunctional Integration (MMI) cross-cutting initiative. Candidates will be expected to engage in externally funded research, to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to perform service for the institution and professional organizations. Rank, tenure-status, and compensation are contingent upon experience. The primary and secondary appointments for these positions will be determined by the candidate's areas of expertise.
The MMI Initiative is built on the vision to seamlessly integrate materials design with integrated processes within the context of scalable manufacturing. The central goal is to create hybrid technologies that enable new functionalities, where energy efficient performance is a key requirement. This multidisciplinary initiative centered in UVa Engineering has emerged from the collaborative work pursued by faculty from several departments, including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Targeted application areas currently include sensors and actuators in hostile environments, high frequency photonic circuits and systems, hardware for the internet of things, and 5G networks. All related areas of experimental, computational and/or theoretical research will be considered, including but not limited to:
-Next-generation resilient materials and hardware for sensors
-Energy management for electronic/photonic material systems
-Millimeter wave and THz/photonic materials, devices, circuits and systems
-Smart manufacturing and packaging of novel, hybrid, hierarchical materials and systems
-Responsive and reconfigurable materials and platforms
-Ultra-low-power RF and mixed-signal circuits and systems for communication and sensors
-Multiscale modeling of materials and devices
Candidates must have a PhD by the appointment start date that is consistent with one of the disciplines listed above, or closely related fields. Candidates must have a record of research excellence, as appropriate for the candidate's rank, and a commitment to teaching excellence. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise to complement existing strengths and who are committed to solving the most critical problems at the intersection of materials, manufacturing, devices and circuits.
