Job Description:

The Florida Museum of Natural History's Security department is primarily in place to protect the State of Florida's collections and all its occupants. This will include the Exhibits and Public Programs facility at Powell Hall and the McGuire Center of Lepidoptera and Biodiversity.

This public museum is open seven days a week to patrons from 10:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Saturday, and 1:00pm –5:00pm on Sundays. Museum employees, volunteers, and researchers may occupy the building at any hour of the day to perform their business.

Many activities at the museum take place outside of normal business hours, such as early arrivals for contract work and research, and evening and night events for special programs and donors.

The OPS Museum Security and Operations staff member will patrol and maintain security in exhibits and galleries, offices, shops, and classrooms at Powell Hall and other museum facilities. Responds to unusual, suspicious, or extraordinary conditions. Investigates security violations. Prepares and files reports on all activities and incidents. Serves as a liaison with the university and law enforcement personnel. Greets and gives visitors the rules of the Butterfly Rainforest exhibit with excellent customer service skills.

Sets up and breaks down special events the museum hosts, which includes lifting and moving furniture, tables, chairs, etc. according to layouts and diagrams. Secures compound gates and building exit doors each evening and opens them in the morning for visitors and staff. Turns lights on or off as required and ensures doors are properly locked. Turns exhibit components on or off as required. Always maintains a comfortable and safe environment while assisting Events staff, during and after-hours events.

The OPS Museum Security and Operations staff member will also provide directions and explanations to visitors and act as an educational liaison to our visitors.

30-40 hours per week (60-80 biweekly hours).

Weekday and weekend night (6pm – 12am) availability needed. Flexible - Some weekday and weekend days needed.

Advertised Salary:

$10.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school graduate
  • A minimum of two years customer service experience
  • Two years experience in a similar role preferred
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred Qualifications:
  • College degree in similar field
  • First Aid/AED certification
  • Valid driver's license
