Position #698101 - Requisition 09024 The Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome is seeking to fill a full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Director of Finance & Administration (Business Services Director) position.

Job Summary:
Jobs in this career family provide general business operations of the organization or a combination of operational responsibilities covering multiple career families. Functions include institutional research, statistical analysis, policy development and review, strategic planning and broad unit business operations such as parking and transportation services, risk management, childcare services, real estate and property management, retail services or job responsibilities that combine fiscal, HR and operational management responsibilities.

Directors are responsible for the ongoing leadership and oversight of a department, including the development of strategies and processes which contribute to the University and/or campus mission and accountability for services provided. Directors are responsible and accountable for the analysis of fiscal and human resources required to achieve department objectives including hiring, compensation, termination, and performance management of subordinate employees.

Position Emphasis: The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) oversees the administrative affairs of the department to ensure that University, School, UPI and hospital business standards and objectives are met. The individual establishes the business and administrative environment to support the Department's research and academic programs. The DFA is responsible for working with the Executive Director on financial planning and development of a comprehensive strategic plan that evaluates the financial and programmatic impacts of new initiatives, as well as those associated with internal and external trends. This role has departmental fiduciary responsibilities and is accountable for meeting standards for compliance with applicable School, University and Hospital policies, procedures, laws, etc. The DFA communicates financial and organizational information to affiliates, including quarterly financial reporting per term sheet requirements.

The Director of Finance and Administration will assist/advise the Executive Director, and when necessary, represent the Executive Director as an advocate of the Linda Crnic Institute's needs and goals in budget, space, and other negotiations with managerial and financial staff and committees at the School, University, Hospitals and UPI, as well as with outside vendors.

Duties may include:

  • Analyzing and interpreting of financial information and aiding in the development of business operations plans; forecasting critical milestones and potential obstacles and evaluating alternate courses of action; balancing short-term and long-term strategic objectives to maximize the financial performance of the department.
  • Leading the development of Department policies and procedures to govern financial decision-making including budgets, expense management, and capital spending to ensure the achievement of expense management and revenue objectives.
  • Forming a partnership with Research Administrators and Associate Chairs of Research to build a cohesive research team for pre-award and post-award grant management.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, executive/senior faculty members and key stakeholders, the DFA develops and refines a strategic plan. The DFA is responsible for developing and tracking metrics associated with the strategic plan as well as providing ongoing communication regarding the progress of meeting milestones and objectives in the plan.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, healthcare administration, public administration or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • The position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible management experience, which includes developing and managing financial analyses and budgets, as well as supervising administrative and support personnel.

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Condition of Employment: Must be willing and able to travel throughout Colorado (i.e. Boulder) for occasional work events/meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or higher earned degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, healthcare administration, public administration or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Broad and diversified professional management experience preferably in an academic medical center environment.
  • Experience managing staff, students and interns.

  • Solid understanding in budget development and management; billing operations, reimbursements, financial contracts and consulting agreements.
  • Solid understanding of contract and grant administration, including NIH, foundation & industry grant experience.
