Facilities Management at UVA is now accepting applications for our highly regarded Apprentice Program.
The University of Virginia's Apprentice Program began in 1982 and was the first Apprentice Program started by a state agency. This unique program provides an opportunity to learn a trade while working as a full-time employee at UVA. Apprenticeships are full-time, paid positions with UVA benefits. Apprentices learn their selected trade through a combination of on-the-job training, technical education and classroom instruction over a four-year period. This training is fully paid for by the University of Virginia.
The Carpenter Apprentice support Facilities Maintenance's goal of providing consistent, cost effective, efficient, and reliable maintenance and service to the University facilities. This employee will be trained through the apprenticeship program to become skilled and certified as a Carpenter. Training will consist of rotations throughout the department to provide broad range of skills to support the construction and maintenance needs to the University
Carpenter Apprentices may be exposed to different temperatures depending on location of job and date performed. They will work with and around machinery, work from high places which can include scaffolding, and stand on different surfaces depending on location of job being performed. The employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend and twist in order to perform their work. Duties involved walking around job sites, working with materials of different weights and performing repetitive motions.
Online Applications for this year's Apprentice positions will be accepted from March 31 through April 23, 2017. The candidates selected for hire will start work in August 2017. Applicants must be at least 18 years' old and possess a high school diploma or GED by the start date.
This year, we are recruiting for Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry and HVAC. Applicants should apply to each posting for any/all trades they are interested in.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. An aptitude in working with building trades as demonstrated through high school shop classes, summer or after school jobs, or similar work.
2. An aptitude for good classroom performance as demonstrated through high school or post high school performance.
3. Good communication skills.
