The Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) at William Paterson University seeks to fill two full-time non-tenurable faculty positions, at instructor or assistant professor rank to teach writing courses in the first-year sequence. The mission of the PWR is to create a strong culture of writing, across multiple contexts, guided by research and pedagogy in the field of Writing Studies. The PWR seeks to ensure students develop an understanding of the complex writing and rhetorical capabilities required in academic, professional, and everyday life. Positions are ten-month, renewable annually for a possible maximum of three years to begin September 1, 2017. Instructors carry a 4/4 teaching load in the first-year writing sequence. A strong annual performance is expected in teaching and service to the program.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting the PWR Director and Assistant Director in coordinating selected program activities or projects, which may include, for example, portfolio review, mentoring, or teaching workshops. The selected candidates will teach four courses per semester in first-year sequence; follow PWR guidelines for course content and teaching, including office hours, grading policies and course content; and support PWR assessment activities as needed. S/he will support Program in Writing and Rhetoric initiatives through participation in program meetings and activities, which may include development of workshops, assistance in course evaluations and placement essays.
A Master’s degree in Composition and Rhetoric, Writing Studies, English, or related field; Ph.D. preferred. Appointment at rank of Assistant Professor (depending on qualifications). A minimum of three years of related teaching experience at the college level is required. Preference given to candidates with graduate course work in composition theory or pedagogy. Additional experience in WAC or WID programs and/or experience in writing center consulting preferred.
