Located just west of Atlanta, The University of West Georgia is a vibrant, 24 hour campus with over 13,000 students, UWG is a diverse academic community and is committed to providing a safe environment for those who work and study here as well as those who visit our campus. The University Police Department supports this mission by playing a critical role in the safety and protection of all constituents and serving as a campus partner to other departments that address the needs of the students. The primary focus of this position is to provide continuous patrolling of the campus, responding to reports of crime, respond to calls for service and facility security. Additional essential duties include collecting, recording and securing evidence from crime scenes, interviewing those persons involved, writing reports, and making arrests for violation of state law and local ordinances. Other duties include assisting motorists, responding to medical emergencies, testifying in courts, serving as back-up dispatcher, assisting the Criminal Investigations Division and local law enforcement agencies as needed, serving criminal warrants and other duties as assigned. The Home Department will be the Carrollton location but on occasion will assist to cover the Newnan Campus on a rotating schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of an Associate’s Degree or two years towards a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice or related field, or 2 years as a certified police officer preferred.
Fluency in Spanish or another language is considered very desirable.

Salary $15.87 Minimum - $22.38 Midpoint (Hourly) Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Applicant must be in good physical health, possess 20/20 vision or vision correctable to 20/20; ability to hear and speak clearly, walk, run, jump and lift up to 40 pounds. Ability to use a firearm safely and accurately is crucial.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED Equivalent is required. U.S. Citizen, 20 years minimum age, no felony convictions, no more than 1 misdemeanors of a non-violent nature, and drug free for a minimum of 3 years. Applicant must be capable of working effectively within a diverse, college age community. Good communications skills are essential. Must be eligible for certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. Must be able to speak and write in English in an effective manner. Ability to work overtime if needed and possession of reliable transportation and personal phone is required. Must possess minimum computer skills or be able to learn to operate the computer programs utilized by the department. Screening tools utilized include a physical agility test, written exam, interview board, drug testing (hair), voice stress examination, psychological examination including an oral interview and extensive background check. Valid Drivers License.
