The Prevention Research Center for Family and Child Health (PRC) has been a section in the Department of Pediatrics since 1993. The PRC is devoted to improving the health and functioning of at-risk children and their families through developing, testing, and replicating community based health care interventions. The primary work conducted by the Center has been to develop and support the national and international replication of a program of prenatal and infancy/toddler home-visiting by nurses known as the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP). Today, a significant portion of the Center's work consists of supporting longitudinal follow-ups of the randomized clinical trials of the NFP to examine its long-term effects on health over the life-course, and conducting research to improve NFP effectiveness.

Job Summary:
  • The University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking applications for a health sciences programmer/analyst. This is a .50 FTE position for a candidate with experience in managing large longitudinal (e.g. 5+ million record) datasets. Data are primarily derived from the NFP information system. It will be required to efficiently download, clean and manipulate large data files into workable datasets for statisticians and other researchers in the group.

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Collaborate with the National Service Office of the NFP to significantly improve the procedures for obtaining and maintaining national replication data at the PRC
    • Regularly download large data files from FTP servers
    • Clean data
    • Create calculated variables
  • Develop documentation
    • Data extraction procedures
    • Steps in cleaning and data manipulations
    • Data dictionaries for analysis files given to statisticians and other department researchers
  • Communicate project status and findings to others
  • Other miscellaneous programming tasks assigned by department researchers
    • Ex.1 Database development and upkeep
    • Ex.2 Produce summary statistics and other simple analyses

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS computer science, statistics or related field
  • 3 years of experience managing large data files

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • SAS Programming skills: Data step, PROC SQL, macro, arrays
  • SQL coding
  • Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science, statistics or related field
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis
  • SQL certification
  • SAS certification
  • DBA certification
  • Visual Basic programming skills
  • Previous experience in extraction and analysis of large datasets in a university and/or research environment highly desired
