Temporary Employment

Title:Substitute Teaching Assistant.

Duration of Assignment: Any length of time from one day to several weeks, dictated by the absence of the teacher/teaching assistant. Will be offered shifts on an "as needed" basis in infant, toddler and preschool classrooms. Hours will correspond to the teacher's hours that you are replacing, and cover the period from July 1, 2015 - June 30th 2016. Rehire for future years is contingent on need and performance.


•Function as a member of a trans-disciplinary teaching team; share ideas and information with colleagues; participate in the University community of learners;

•Plan, organize and implement curriculum and lesson plans based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, families, communities and curriculum goals and standards that stimulate and support children's growth and development; provide opportunities for children to experiment and learn in a warm, safe, nurturing environment;

•Maintain classroom and playgrounds in a neat, clean, safe, attractive manner, examine environment for any potential hazards; maintain proper condition of materials and equipment in classroom; maintain inventories of materials and complete materials requests;

•Create a community in the classroom that is nurturing, caring, safe and conductive to learning for all members of the community; participate in inquiry, reflection, coaching and mentoring activities;

•Demonstrate culturally responsive pedagogy;

•Model respect for individual differences, for multiple ways of knowing;

•Maintain reports, charts, checklists, anecdotal records on children; determine and plan to meet the children's individual and collective needs;

•Provides children with the necessary physical care, such as feedings, toileting, washing, and other hygienic aspects and assists in teaching self-help skills;

•Develop and maintain good working relationships with families; develop and maintain positive, respectful, open two-way communication with families about their children and the Center;

•Report any instances of suspected child abuse to DYFS, classroom Teacher and Center Director/

•Maintain valid Infant/Child CPR and First Aid Certification;

•Performs other duties as assigned;

•Knowledge of how children learn and develop and of Early Childhood Curriculum;

•Ability to learn how to make adaptations and modifications to the curriculum, plans and schedules based on individual learning needs and differences;

•Knowledge of and an ability to implement the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Children's Center after a period of training;

•Strong interpersonal skill;

•Ability to successfully fulfill the job responsibilities in a creative, conscientious, dependable, collegial, reflective, nurturing style;

•Ability to demonstrate initiative, reflective practices and life-long learning;

•Possess the literacy skills associated with an educated person; can speak and write fluently and communicate effectively;

•Ability to prepare and maintain records, developmental checklists, reports and files and other materials;

•Ability to physically lift and move children as needed;

Qualifications & Requirements


•Degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, CDA or other field related to Child Growth & Development is preferred.

•Successful work history of at least three years in a child care, preschool or primary classroom setting is required.
