McPherson/Eveillard Postdoctoral Fellowship in Africana Studies
The Department of Africana Studies at Smith College invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Sociology or Anthropology, with emphasis on the social and cultural dimensions of blackness in the U.S. This appointment includes full benefits, mentoring, and research support. Ph.D. or A.B.D. in Sociology, Anthropology or a related field is required by time of appointment.
The McPherson/Eveillard Fellow will teach two courses per academic year and will be expected to conduct research and participate in the life of the Department. We welcome expertise in class; urban studies; the black family; carceral studies and/or the study of crime; the sociology of religion or education or space (demography/geography) or medicine/public health. We also welcome candidates who consider gender and/or sexuality in their research. Central to the college’s mission is a commitment to mentoring underrepresented and first-generation students and, as such, this ideal is a preferred qualification for this position
The Department of Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary unit with four full-time faculty in literature, cultural studies, and history. Smith College is a private and highly selective liberal arts college for women located in Northampton, Massachusetts. Smith is also part of the Five College Consortium along with Amherst, Hampshire, and Mount Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
