Director of the School of Language, Culture, and Society
The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) at Oregon State University invites applications and nominations for the Director of the School of Language, Culture, and Society (SLCS). The Director leads a unique school of learners, teachers, and scholars in the continuing development of its shared vision. The Director supervises the School’s academic programs (Anthropology; College Student Services Administration; Ethnic Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and World Languages and Cultures) and serves as chief administrative officer and advocate for the school as a whole.
The SLCS advances innovative and applied scholarship at the intersection of the social sciences and the humanities. We share commitments to social justice, diverse communities of people and perspectives, and meaningful communication through social, cultural, and linguistic scholarship and practice.
The next Director will
- lead the faculty in an ongoing process of refining the School’s vision and identity
- effect strategy to further the School vision in relation to college and university goals and policies
- foster the applied focus of the School to engage with communities locally, nationally, and transnationally through scholarship and practice
- support the teaching, scholarly/creative, and service functions of the School
- manage personnel, budgets, and other resources
- represent the School internally and externally
The Director is a full-time (1.0 FTE) 12-month academic administrator tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
60% Leadership, Administration, and Management – Lead, direct, and coordinate the School of Language, Culture, and Society. Provide oversight in hiring, mentoring, promotion, and tenure processes, and in evaluation of faculty and staff. Supervise School faculty and staff, including program coordinators, advisors, etc. Represent the School at internal and external functions; enhance School visibility and impact. Develop and manage the School’s resources (e.g., develop budgets and monitor expenses; effectively use available resources).
25% Teaching, Service, and Other Assigned Responsibilities – Teach at least one course per year, collaborate with CLA and OSU leadership, serve on college and university committees, cultivate donors, and perform other duties as required by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
15% Scholarly and Creative Work – Publish, write grants, present at professional conferences and lectures, and otherwise engage in public dissemination of scholarship appropriate to disciplinary standards and expectations.
- Doctoral degree in one of the disciplines represented within the School or in a closely related field
- Distinguished record of professional accomplishment that merits a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in the School of Language, Culture, and Society at OSU
- Successful higher education administrative/leadership experience that demonstrates a record of community building and facilitation of vision and strategic goal-setting
- Evidence of effective post-secondary teaching and mentorship
- A record of actively advancing:
- Diversity of people and perspectives
- Structural/institutional access and equity
- Just and inclusive community and practices
- Demonstrated leadership addressing the complexity of human and institutional relationships Experience managing personnel matters, budget, and other resource needs
- Proficiency in a language in addition to English
- Substantial international experience
- Demonstrated experience working with/for marginalized communities
