IAALS, the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, is a national, independent research center dedicated to facilitating continuous improvement and advancing excellence in the American legal system. We are a think tank that goes one step further we are practical and solution oriented. Our specialty is the development and application of innovative solutions for the toughest problems facing our courts and profession, and we work with experts and groups around the country to achieve our mission. Our mission is to forge innovative and practical solutions to problems in our system in collaboration with the best minds in the country. IAALS has four initiative areas. Quality Judges identifies and recommends empirically based models for choosing, evaluating, and retaining judges that preserve impartiality and promote accountability. Rule One identifies and recommends court processes and procedures that provide greater access, efficiency, and accountability. Honoring Families identifies and recommends dignified and fair processes for the resolution of divorce, separation, and custody in a manner that is more accessible and more responsive to children, parents, and families. Educating Tomorrows Lawyers identifies innovative models of legal education that align legal education with the needs of an evolving profession.

Position Summary

The Director of Strategic Partnerships reports to the Associate Executive Director of IAALS. This position is responsible for implementing a Strategic Development Plan, focusing on prospecting, cultivating, soliciting and closing major and principal-level philanthropic gifts and grants for IAALS fundraising campaign. The position also manages and grows contributions from affinity groups. Employee will need to be familiar with IAALS work, and will need to work collaboratively with University Advancement. Employee may be required to travel regularly, both in the state of Colorado and throughout the United States.

  • Access to heads of law firms, corporate legal departments and organizations that serve them.
  • Ability to represent IAALS and the University as a whole in a variety of capacities.
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality, and prioritize assignments.
  • Demonstrated organizational, managerial, leadership, and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to foster and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, donors, volunteers, and University officials.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least five years of fundraising experience, focusing on major gifts work -- including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, reporting, and stewardship.
  • Familiarity with affinity groups that support the legal system.
  • Demonstrated track record in working collaboratively in a unit-based organization; as well as across units and divisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • JD or MBA
  • 5-10 years experience as a fundraiser in a professionally oriented organization.
  • Marketing experience.
  • Experience developing and managing a budget.
  • Experience with foundation proposals.
  • Experience training and managing staff. Prior P & L and revenue generation responsibility.
  • Experience working directly with a Board of Directors. Understanding of the law and legal institutions.
