The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking to fill the position of Chemical Safety Consultant as part of the Chemical and Laboratory Safety Group. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing integral programs that support the dynamic research and operations of The University of Virginia and The University of Virginia Medical Center.
The Chemical Safety Consultant works in a team environment to coordinate and conduct laboratory safety assessments, provide guidance on laboratory relocations and decommissions, and consult on best practices, regulatory compliance and hazard mitigation as it relates to safety in laboratories. This position will work independently and collaboratively to create content for technical guidance and training modules.
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in a physical, life, engineering (biological, chemical or materials), or safety science. Successful candidates will work well in a team, be detail oriented, able to balance multiple projects at a time, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University community. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Familiarity with chemistry, routine laboratory procedures, and safe laboratory practices.
Ability to work in a team environment as a collaborative, professional and respectful team member
Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in-writing
Ability to work a schedule that may include on-call responsibilities to cover holiday, weekend and after hour response
Ability to work safely with and around hazardous materials (e.g. chemical, biological, radioactive)
Comfortable working in a variety of work spaces including patient care, animal, research laboratory and outdoor environments
Ability to analyze data and present findings to stakeholders across the institution
Ability to meet all physical requirements of the position including moderate lifting and standing, sitting and walking for extended periods of time
Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including a respirator
