Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Emergency Services at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada, a fully affiliated academic Health Sciences facility of the University of Toronto. Effective start date is September 1, 2016, or as mutually agreed upon.

The Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department, for providing institutional leadership on issues related to emergency services and for ensuring effective and efficient program operations. Candidates must hold an MD and have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, or equivalent qualifications and will be qualified to hold a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in an appropriate clinical department at the University of Toronto. Equally important will be the vision to continue integration with Sunnybrook's programs and strategic priorities as well as with our broader community; excellent interpersonal skills; strong leadership capabilities; experience and knowledge regarding the recruitment of academic physicians; a record of peer-reviewed research, of leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education, or of leadership in model service delivery as a creative professional academic activity.

The Department of Emergency Services at Sunnybrook is an integral member of the Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Program. We are the busiest trauma Center in Canada, and are a Code Stroke, STEMI, neurosurgical, veterans, and regional cancer center. The Department of Emergency Services has 37 physicians and sees over 60,000 patients annually. We have an older adult, high complex, high-acuity population with almost 90% of patients in the CTAS1-3 level and admission rate of 22%. Sunnybrook Center for Pre-hospital Medicine serves as the base hospital for the Toronto and surrounding south central Ontario. We have a strong group of award-winning academic physicians with expertise in education, research, trauma, mass casualty, pre-hospital care, critical care, and quality improvement. Our award-winning scientists have gained international reputation for their expertise in vulnerable populations, pre-hospital care, health services delivery, quality improvement, and education. We are an educational center of excellence for multi-level and multi-disciplinary ED training with specialty programs in ultrasound, simulation, trauma, advanced life support and prehospital care. Our vision is "to be the preeminent Canadian academic emergency medicine department and an expert resource for emergency medicine and services."

Sunnybrook plays a leadership role in the Ontario health care system and in caring for its community through eight comprehensive programs: Holland Musculoskeletal; Brain Sciences; Odette Cancer Centre; Women and Babies; Schulich Heart Centre; Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care; St. John's Rehabilitation Program; and Veterans and Community. Sunnybrook has identified five strategic priorities in: Trauma, Cancer, Heart and Vascular, High-Risk Maternal and Newborn Health and Image Guided Brain Therapies. Estimated remuneration will be in the range of $250,000 - $350,000 and commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
