The University of St. Thomas Dining Services is a self-operated service that provides meals for approximately 1,200 students, faculty, and staff, as well as community members, daycare service, and visitors. This is a full time, benefits eligible position. Essential Functions:

  • Operate the dish machine, providing clean, sanitary dishes, flatware, pots, pans, utensils and equipment. This includes monitoring temperature controls, chemical levels, being familiar with the various chemicals and proper installation of them.
  • Keep the dish machine clean and report problems to supervisor immediately. Monitor and record temperatures and refill and clean the machine as directed.
  • Correct usage of three compartment sink – wash, rinse, sanitize – so as to minimize the amount of food waste in the machine.
  • Keep dish room and dish machine clean and organized, properly storing all tableware and kitchen items.
  • Assist in kitchen with some food preparation and putting away some goods and products.
  • Remove trash, discard boxes, and bring recycling to the proper areas.
  • Ensure food waste is captured in the hog buckets and the hog buckets are brought down to the proper location when full or at the end of the night.
Minimum qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in food operations.

Preferred qualifications: Serv Safe certification.

Knowledge of: Principles, methods and equipment used in a restaurant setting; safe work practices and sanitation related to food preparation and service; basic computer applications related to the job.

Skill in: Serving meals in a restaurant setting; overseeing and prioritizing assignments; operating, cleaning and performing minor maintenance to large institutional food preparation and cooking equipment; maintaining accurate records and preparing work related reports; making accurate arithmetic calculations; reading, understanding and following oral and written directions; multi-tasking and organizing many events at the same time; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; maintaining security of facilities and equipment; contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.

Physical requirements: Ability to lift 50 lbs. Work in a hot and humid environment. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to move heavy carts to put away dishes and pots and pans. Ability to adapt to heavy workload pressure at peak times.
