Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) represents a partnership between Alberta Health Services, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the University of Calgary. The Institute was created to facilitate the coordination and integration of Child Health promotion, health care innovation, research, and education in southern Alberta.  ACHRI (https://research4kids.ucalgary.ca/) has three strategic research themes - 1) Behaviour and the Developing Brain, 2) Genes, Development and Health, and 3) Healthy Outcomes –supported by crosscutting platforms in Health Genomics and Bioinformatics, Training, and Human Imaging. The 2015-2020 Strategic Plan outlines the Institute’s path to being the leading child health research institute in Western Canada by 2020. Linkages with other Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) Institutes, other University of Calgary Faculties, as well as with aligned community-based services are essential to the Institute’s success. Institute membership is interdisciplinary and is comprised of researchers, educators, clinicians, and allied health professionals. The Institute attracts research revenue in excess of $ 30 Million annually.


The Institute and its founding partners are searching for a proven leader and scientist to assume the role of Director, ACHRI. The Director is responsible for realizing the Institute’s vision of “a healthier and more prosperous future for our children through research”.  The Director will provide scientific and administrative leadership to guide the Institute’s strategic direction, and to attract and manage financial resources so that the Institute’s goals are achieved.  Communicating and reporting to the Institute’s partners, community, and members about the Institute’s programs and performance will be an important aspect of the Director’s role. The ability to collaborate effectively with other CSM Leaders to support ACHRI’s participation in the school’s focus on precision medicine is essential. The Directorship is linked to the Husky Energy Chair in Child and Maternal Health Child Health. The Director will also manage considerable financial resources supporting the core operations of the Institute.  


The selected candidate must have a strong academic background with demonstrated internationally recognized research and educational achievements, as well as proven leadership strengths and experience.  Areas of particular research focus include biological and psychosocial development, clinical outcomes, pain, precision medicine and the genetic diseases of childhood – all are key areas of considerable past and ongoing investment by the founding partners. The candidate must possess either a PhD and / or an MD and must be appointable at the rank of Professor.  If the successful candidate wishes to practice clinically, they must be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Alberta.
