CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Guttman Community College is seeking a College Laboratory Technician in Science. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to preparing chemicals and reagents for Biology and Chemistry laboratories; working with preserved specimens; and preparing microbiological cultures and media for the biology and science classes. The candidate will also be responsible for the chemical and supply inventory, assisting in purchase of supplies and materials for the classes, basic maintenance of equipment and laboratories, and reinforcing laboratory skills taught by faculty. The CLT will be required to participate in College-wide committees as well as support college initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to maintaining laboratories and supporting science faculty research through the following tasks:

  • Preparing chemicals, solutions, and media for lab.
  • Confirming the availability of all needed supplies and equipment.
  • Managing proper disposal of lab waste.
  • Implementing standard lab/stockroom safety protocol.
  • Assisting in ordering and organizing inventory.
  • Calibrating scientific equipment used in the laboratories.
  • Consulting with appropriate service contractors.
  • Working with repair personnel.
  • Assisting faculty with science demonstrations.
  • Working with the Campus Safety Officer and the Director of Facilities to maintain a safe operating environment.
  • Training and working closely with support staff, including laboratory assistants and student workers.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Located in midtown Manhattan, the Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is CUNY's first new community college in over 40 years. As a small start-up, Guttman Community College requires flexibility and a broad range of skills and competencies from candidates in every position. Guttman currently offers five majors: business administration, information technology, human services, liberal arts and sciences, and urban studies, and will offer additional programs in the future. At full capacity, Guttman will enroll 3,000 to 5,000 students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in the preparation of chemicals and reagents for Biology and Chemistry laboratories preferred.

COMPENSATION

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
