The Community Relations Manager serves as the main point of contact within the university on subjects and issues affecting APU's image and community perceptions/relations and assists in achieving community participation in university life and achieving community support. The manager deals with individuals at all levels concerning issues that involve or are perceived to involve APU. The work involves responsiveness to business, community, school, advocacy groups, and directly affects the public image and perception of APU.
The Community Relations Manager coordinates APU's community outreach activities as a member of the Office of University Relations, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Public Affairs. The manager facilitates internal and external communication regarding both APU's community relations activities and the needs of the community, leads the university in the development of a vision and strategic plan for APU's community relations, develops networks of internal and external leaders to assist in the implementation of that vision, and coordinates implementation.
The manager serves as the public outreach liaison with business and civic associations, advocacy organizations, educational institutions, community groups, official visiting delegations, and individual citizens on matters related to APU. Creates and manages community relations events; writes, edits, and distributes communications and calendars to the community/public and political stakeholders; oversees corporate memberships, sponsorships, and university representation on boards; and assists in the execution of correspondence, speeches, and presentations by senior management. Oversees relationship management system and lists designed to track engagement. Consults and collaborates with other members of the Public Affairs team, namely public relations and government relations, as well as key staff throughout the university.
- Bachelor's degree in communications, public administration, public relations, or related social sciences fields. Master's degree preferred.
- Three-Five years experience in one or more of the following fields: community relations, public affairs, public relations, or community-based human services, to include duties in one or more of the following: a) performing community outreach and advocacy activities; (b) overseeing corporate-level memberships; (c) recommending content and preparing materials for senior management appearances/presentations; (d) planning and managing internal and external events; and (e) preparing, disseminating, and responding to community-based inquiries.
- Knowledge of the people and issues impacting Azusa, Glendora, and other San Gabriel Valley communities. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
- Extensive travel in and around the San Gabriel Valley, with periodic travel to APU regional campuses.
