I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Research Integrity, the Director, Research Integrity and Compliance will be responsible for all matters related to research compliance involving animal care and use, human subjects protection, financial conflicts of interest, research involving radiation, biohazards and other controlled substances, responsible conduct of research, data use agreements and data management plans, and export controls.

The Director will regularly participate in policy review, creation, and implementation for institutional policies related to research compliance. The position will be responsible for facilitating the process concerning allegations of research misconduct and is responsible for designing and implementing education and training for faculty, staff, and students in the responsible conduct of research. The Director will supervise two research compliance officers who work on issues involving financial conflicts of interest; data use agreements and data management plans; not for cause audits; and export control as well as the Manager of the Office of Laboratory Safety. The position will also serve as deputy to the Associate Vice President for Research Integrity in his/her absence.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

Develops, reviews, and/or provides input into policies and procedures governing research that have university-wide impact. Ensures that members of the GW research community are properly informed about all policies, procedures and regulatory requirements relevant to research compliance.

Works with functional directors to develop standard operating procedures to comply with federal, state, local, and institutional reporting and certification requirements.

Works closely with the Office of General Counsel, the Privacy and Compliance Office, as well as the Sponsored Projects division of the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Oversees responsible conduct of research programs with the input and guidance of the various research deans.

Remains abreast of changes in regulations governing research and communicate those changes to the GW research community as appropriate.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Extensive experience in research compliance in higher education, a research institute, or a government regulatory agency preferred.
Good working knowledge of all research compliance areas (i.e. responsible for Conduct of Research, Laboratory Safety, Animal Research, Human Research, etc).
Demonstrated experience interacting with regulatory governmental agencies, accreditation, or other oversight organizations.
Ability to maintain the highest level of professional conduct and integrity in all circumstances.
Graduate degree in the sciences or law preferred.
Experience managing internal investigations preferred.
Demonstrated supervisory/managerial experience preferred.
