Assistant/Associate/Professor of Nursing
Working Title: Assistant/Associate/Professor of Nursing
Position Type: Teaching and Research Faculty
Department: School of Nursing
Posting Date: 11-15-2016
UVA School of Nursing invites nominations and applications for the Maria Tussi and John Kluge Endowed Professor of Compassionate Care, a position that will also direct the School's Compassionate Care Initiative (CCI) to develop scholarship and programming on contemplative practice in nursing and healthcare.
The most competitive candidate will be an inspiring leader, a connected, high-caliber researcher and a teacher with exceptional strength in collaboration, scholarship promotion, fundraising, and leading institutional growth. He or she will also have a strong record of securing external funding for research related to compassionate care and contemplative practice.
Nationally-known CCI's transformational model aims to cultivate a resilient and compassionate healthcare workforce through education and experience. Its vision is to nurture healthy, happy healthcare professionals and safe and high-functioning care environments where heart and humanity are valued and embodied. CCI activities include retreats, courses, and a wide variety of drop-in classes that teach contemplative practices to students, clinicians and learners across the spectrum in order to promote personal and professional resilience, care quality and improve patient outcomes.
While the Kluge Professor will shape and advance the integration of compassionate care into research, education, clinical practice, and policy, he or she will also collaborate with and mentor students and junior faculty. Knowledge of a wide range of contemplative practices is preferred, and may include topics in end-of-life care, palliative care, augmenting patient safety, and promoting healthy work environments, among other topics. Perhaps most critically, the Kluge Professor will generate original, impactful research demonstrating the efficacy and impact of resilience activities on clinicians and the patients and families they serve.
For the CCI, the director's goal is to build on existing success and stake out a compelling vision, leading efforts to measure and assess programs and secure stable, on-going funding in order to establish a Compassionate Care Institute. Working with CCI's assistant director and its coordinator, the director will support programs for students, faculty and clinicians in the School of Nursing, Medicine and across UVA Health System.
This individual will also navigate and collaborate across a growing network of UVA organizations - including the Mindfulness Center, the Center for Appreciative Practice, the Center for ASPIRE, and UVA's Contemplative Sciences Center to sponsor research, events and programs.
A doctoral degree is required. A doctoral degree in nursing is preferred, although candidates with doctoral degrees in related fields are encouraged to apply. Registered nurses must be eligible for licensure in Virginia. Joint appointments across UVA may be possible.
