This position will serve both the research and teaching projects of Dr. Susan Wessler. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that undergraduate students in Biology 20 and the undergraduate researchers have the best experience possible. Dr. Wessler plans to recruit a large number of undergraduate researchers in her laboratory to investigate the Fairchild mandarin genome. The successful SRA III will be part of a team that engages undergraduates in research to further their interest as science as a profession. The successful candidate will be conduct original research and support the teaching laboratory and all work may result in publications. The successful SRA III candidate will be expected to develop tissue culture of Fairchild mandarin resulting in the regeneration of genetically engineered plants. The successful candidate will also prepare primary reagents and oversee undergraduates who prepare for the laboratory course. The successful candidate will be part of a team including professors, academic coordinators, post-doctoral associates and graduate students dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of UCR's highly diverse and talented undergraduates.
The candidate must have general knowledge of molecular biology techniques, bioinformatics and plant tissue culture. Experience in maintaining active research and teaching laboratories is also required. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work in a highly diverse environment and willingness to promote undergraduate success.
Preferably the successful candidate will have extensive experience supervising undergraduate researchers and laboratory maintenance. Preference will be given to candidates who have developed and published original plant tissue culture protocols.
