The Associate Director for Membership and Consortial Relations develops and implements IA's membership model, recruits and retains member institutions, engages members in the conference, and develops regional hubs in conjunction with annual conferences. 

 

The Associate Director manages activities which contribute to acquisition, retention and growth of contributing members. Responsible for growing membership to reflect the diversity of higher education institutions, including research universities, land-grants, Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and arts/design schools. The Associate Director assesses refinements and resources available to retain and grow annual membership. 

 

The Associate Director reports to the Managing Director, working closely with the Managing Director and Faculty Director to achieve membership and consortium goals.  

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, and knowledge of arts, humanities, and design fields. 

• Experience in conceptualizing, planning, priority establishment and implementation of a complex membership program. 

• Research, analytical, and strategic planning skills to drive overall success, develop action plans, project budget implications based on membership fees, and implement relevant tactics. 

• Interpersonal and communications skills to build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups. 

• Experience working on a diverse staff team, and building partnerships across diverse institutional contexts. 

• Experience creating and maintaining collaborative working relationships with all levels of the organization from a wide variety of functional areas, backgrounds and organizational levels. 

• Professional experience and political acumen to handle sensitive or difficult situations diplomatically, to represent high level executives with tact and discretion. 

• Writing and editing skills to produce compelling and effective messaging. 

• Organizational and time management skills to achieve progress on multiple simultaneous tasks, meet deadlines, and establish goals and workload priorities with flexibility and shift strategies mid-stream as program needs and goals shift. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Master's degree or equivalent experience, and knowledge of arts, humanities, and design fields. 

• Knowledge of IA and its vision, mission, values, goals, successes, and challenges. 

• Knowledge of the principles, best practices and trends in developing and assessing membership models. 

• Familiarity with issues of concern in the higher education civic engagement and diversity movements including the political environment, power imbalances in campus and community partnerships, and challenges to growing membership associations. 

• Experience working with higher education institutions such as research universities, land-grants, Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and arts/design schools. 

• Critical thinking and analytical skills to recognize potential areas of constituency concern and to address, resolve and/or mitigate problems or issues. 

• Experience using technology to track prospective and current members' participation in IA through Podio, a constituent-relationship management tool, and to meet with members via group-video calling. 

• Experience managing an annual membership campaign in a non-profit environment.
