About the Position

The Assistant Director for Training and Special Projects develops and coordinates a number of special projects for Peer Connections and the Office of Student & Faculty Success. These projects include recruitment & hiring of new peer educators, new peer educator training and on-going general professional development opportunities, early alert coordination, and the development of new projects and partnerships throughout the university. This position will work closely with the rest of the Peer Connections team to develop and maintain programs that lead to retention and graduation of SJSU students in all disciplines. The person in this position would be the designated person responsible if the director was unavailable for any reason.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Recruits, selects, and hires new peer educators. Designs, coordinates, and facilitates new peer educator foundational training. Identifies and determines cause of problems; recommends, develops, and implements initiatives and changes to improve quality & services of Peer Connections as a total unit. Collaborates with other departments, colleges, and programs (i.e. College Success/Advising Centers, Accessible Education Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Career Center, Student Success Task Forces, University Housing Services and faculty) to provide additional support for SJSU students that enhances graduation and retention. Gathers, obtains, and processes information provided by the SJSU community to assist in outreach to students who may be struggling academically. Oversees Early Alert/Spartan Connect Program Represents Peer Connections on departmental, division, and university committees. Assists the Director of Peer Connections in preparation of semi-annual/annual reports on services and programs provided by staff. Prepares progress reports, informs supervisor of project status and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions. Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff for special projects and pilot programs within Peer Connections such as: Early Alert Management Intern(s), Project Succeed Management Intern, and Mentors for Undergraduate Research Opportunities. Monitors payroll, administrative reports, professional development logs, projects, etc. for the assigned staff Designs, coordinates, and facilitates Peer Connections on-going professional development opportunities. Maintains a supportive environment for paraprofessional staff through teambuilding, appreciation, and recognition endeavors.
