Machine Shop Technician
I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The GW College of Professional Studies (CPS) and The GW School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) offers professional academic degrees and programs that prepare students and professionals to excel in science and technology, exhibit constructive leadership and creativity in the face of new environmental and societal challenges, and exude agility in the application of critical analytical skills. CPS and SEAS searching for a full-time Machine Shop Technician whose primary focus is to design and fabricate items that will be used in a lab for experiments. Additionally, this position manages, maintains, and oversees the shop equipment at the Virginia Science and Technology and Foggy Bottom campuses. The position reports to the Senior Associate Dean of CPS and the SEAS Machine Shop Supervisor. This position does not have direct reports but supervises and trains temporary and hourly wage employees, students, research team and faculty using the Machine Shop.
The key responsibilities include:
Manages and supervises the VSTC and FB machine shops as directed by the senior associate dean of CPS and the SEAS machine shop supervisor.
Designs and fabricates laboratory experimental devices from schematics and sketches using machine tools and welding equipment. Verifies that work pieces conform to specifications.
Calibrates and operates machines, tools and instruments. Performs or supervises repairs of machines, tools, and other equipment.
Maintains and orders shop supplies and equipment. Coordinates and allocates payments for orders to the appropriate department.
Analyzes blueprints, layouts, sketches, or work orders to determine tooling instructions, tools and materials needed, and sequence of operations.
Supervises and assists machine shop students and faculty students with problems related to design fabrication and manufacturing of instructional and research devices and equipment.
Schedule and conduct training sessions for research faculty and students in machine shop practice safety.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of training and experience, is necessary plus 3 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree.Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
Three years of experience in mechanical fabrication; machine shop procedures and equipment maintenance.
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
Knowledge of industrial machines and tools, including their uses, repair, and maintenance.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
Experience working within a higher education environment.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, self-motivated, a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal, customer service and communication skills.
Enjoy working as part of a team as well as independently to achieve program goals and objectives
