Position Information: The Assistant Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students (AVC/DOS) reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and provides leadership and accountability for the administration, development, assessment and improvement of student services and experiences which meet the University and divisional missions and strategic plans and helps ensure that we are cultivating a meaningful student experience. The AVC/DOS provides strategic direction to 12 departments in the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs organization focused on student success and development. The AVC/DOS directly or indirectly supervises over 90 permanent and casual staff and an overall divisional operating budget of roughly $12.7M involving multiple funding sources. The AVC/DOS oversees seven Ethnic and Gender Program offices through the Assistant Dean of Students and the offices of Student Life, Residential Life, Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Programs and the Highlander Union Building through the Assistant Dean of Campus Life.
Minimum Requirements: Excellent problem solving skills.
Ability and skill in managing a multi-fund budget, fundraising, and grant procurement.
Ability to conduct strategic planning and forecasting.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of leadership theories and programs.
Expert knowledge of student development theories and practice.
Astute political acumen regarding sensitive and high visibility issues.
Knowledge of organizational climate and multicultural issues.
Demonstrated ability to set specific, measurable, realistic goals for departments and individual staff members.
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, delegate, and monitor work activities.
Ability to identify, define, and evaluate problems, and to plan and develop appropriate long-term and immediate strategies and solutions.
Ability to develop procedures and methodology, which establish priorities to achieve desired results and objectives for multiple offices and the campus.
Ability to set priorities and assign resources to meet multiple goals and deadlines.
Skill in providing imaginative and creative solutions and being a resourceful problem-solver.
Ability to identify student populations, conduct research, and direct programs and support services aimed at diverse student constituencies.
Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, and other members of the community. Ability to involve others in the decision-making process and ability to increase staff effectiveness by fostering collaborative and supportive relations.
Ability to prepare and manage a variety of budgets, make realistic and equitable fiscal decisions, and prepare cogent budgetary and annual reports.
Skill in counseling students and interpersonal communication.
Knowledge of human resources policies and practices, including classification systems, compensation issues, and selection processes.
