Position Summary: Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CHEMS) with a preferred starting date of August 16, 2017.

The CHEMS Department has vibrant research and education programs in both Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. The tenured faculty count stands at 28. The faculty have received numerous awards and honors, including University Distinguished Faculty, NSF CAREER, Teaching Excellence and Research Scholar and have been named Fellows in many professional societies. The Department has strong research programs with research expenditures of about $9M per year. Current graduate enrollment is ~100 PhD students and ~700 undergraduates. CHEMS faculty are participating in federal and industry-supported centers and leading the Composite Materials and Structures Center (IACMI-DOE); and the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (DOE).

The CHEMS Chair will be expected to:
- oversee Department operations, personnel and resources;
- promote the development of the departmental vision of academic leadership and excellence;
- represent the Department to the academic community, industry, and government;
- actively work to identify and pursue innovations in research, education, and service;
- lead the Department and the College in strategic planning; and
- promote diversity within the department and the institution.

Faculty: Minimum Qualifications Support Staff: Minimum Requirements The successful candidate must have an earned PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related field and be qualified for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure. The candidate must provide evidence of scientific and organizational leadership and educational innovation with experience in academia, industry, or government. The candidate should have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and a distinguished track record of research and funding from diverse sources.
