Degree and Area of Specialization: BS Medical Microbiology, Medical Technology, Bacteriology. Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing Personnel Standards required. MS Preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: Minimum 7 years (10 years preferred) working in a Clinical Microbiology laboratory. Extensive molecular diagnostic, antibiotic susceptibility testing knowledge/experience preferred.
License or certificate: Ability to pass Select Agent Certification required. Ability to pass a visual color screening test required.
Position Summary: This position is in the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The employee in this position functions very independently as the Team Leader of the Parasitology testing team and also works collaboratively within another CDD Bacteriology team consisting of a minimum of six microbiologists. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to: 1) independently performing new diagnostic test method development and validation; 2) manipulation of patient and reference samples, performing diagnostic testing/ and entering specimen data and communications into the CDD Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); 3) generating worksheets, laboratory reports and performing other routine laboratory activities. This position participates in ongoing quality improvement/quality assurance activities and the instruction of laboratorians, students and medical personnel in laboratory procedures. Demonstrates excellent teamwork and communication skills through scheduling and leading team meetings, maintaining communication with Division Leadership (Directors and Supervisors); and working with others to determine appropriate work schedules. This position works collaboratively with the Wisconsin Division of Public Heath (WDPH), Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section (CDES) staff to assist with program related testing, data management, teaching, outreach and research activities, grant writing and budget preparation and outbreak response. Primary work hours are 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, including weekend, holiday and emergency response testing as needed.
Additional Information: A successful visual color screening test is required prior to an offer of employment. This position requires travel as needed, and applicants must have experience delivering lectures / presentations. Applicants must be available for on-call public health emergencies, weekends and holidays.
