Director of Mission for Life

The University of Mary invites applications for a full time, exempt Director of Mission for Life.  The Director of Mission for Life is a position created to provide leadership for achievement of the university’s strategic initiative to develop and implement a world-class service-learning program, Mission for Life, which will serve as one of the pillars of the university’s distinctive Education for Life student experience. As part of this initiative, each undergraduate student will be required to complete a significant service experience that will include substantial preparation and subsequent reflection in the light of the principles of Catholic social teaching. The new service program will subsume the existing student volunteer program and bring into coordination the various opportunities and initiatives for service and outreach university-wide.  The Mission for Life program may eventually be expanded and elevated to include the university's work campus initiative.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides leadership and vision to develop, implement and build Mission for Life, a ground-breaking and integrative service program based on Catholic social teaching, as one of the pillars of the university’s formative, Education for Life, student experience
  • Coordinates the planning, execution, and evaluation for the annual, university-wide, Day of Service
  • Provides all new traditional undergraduate students with an in-depth orientation to service-learning, appealing to the Benedictine value of service and the commitment of our founding Sisters
  • Pioneers creative solutions by which nontraditional undergraduate students (degree completion adults, military students, etc.) can meaningfully participate in Mission for Life
  • Consults with the President’s Council, the university’s academic leadership, subject matter experts (e.g. the USCCB Department of Peace, Justice, and Human Development) to establish the vision, foundations, and learning outcomes for student service experiences offered by the university and coordinates assessment and evaluation to demonstrate program effectiveness
  • Collaborates with departments of the university (social work, occupational therapy, nursing, university ministry, etc.) to develop new service opportunities and to bring existing opportunities into appropriate integration with Mission for Life
  • Collaborates with community leaders, representatives from local, regional, national and international organizations and agencies and key members of the university faculty and staff to develop and maintain a variety of sites where students are able to fulfill their service requirements
  • Researches and pursues funding opportunities (e.g. grants, donors) to enhance Mission for Life, with the support of the university’s Office of Mission Advancement
  • Develops and implements a strategy to evaluate program effectiveness through assessment for use in planning. By May 31 each year, prepares an annual report to summarize program activities, outcomes, highlights, proposed annual goals and a proposed budget. Provides monthly dashboard reports to show program activity
  • Serves on the planning team for the annual March for Life pilgrimage
  • Serves as a member and attends meetings of the Student Development Leadership Team and meetings with supervisors as scheduled
  • Recruits, trains, mentors and supervises student employees in the Mission for Life department
  • Serves as advisor to key student organizations dedicated to service
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate professional boundaries in relationships with students, faculty and staff
  • Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Student Development and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ

Qualifications Include:

  • A graduate degree in a field closely related to the position responsibilities is required
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a degree from a graduate program providing strong background in understanding service and the Church's social teachings
  • Three to five years of progressively more responsible professional experience in a college/university service program, youth ministry program with a strong emphasis on service and/or other service programs is required
  • Substantial experience planning and coordinating service projects and/or mission trips, familiarity with the Benedictine tradition of service, experience providing an in-depth orientation to service is preferred

Knowledge and Skills Include:

  • Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the formative process of young adults according to Christian and Catholic teaching and tradition
  • The ability to teach, instruct, mentor and lead
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to engage, and relate effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and be able to lead group discussions and facilitate group decision-making
