Area Coordinator for Living Learning Programs and Residential Engagement

Springfield College invites applications for a full-time, live-on, Area Coordinator in the Office of Housing and Residence Life. The Area Coordinator (AC) is provided with an on-campus, furnished apartment. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life, this professional staff member will assist in the general supervision of college residence halls by coordinating the administrative, programmatic and developmental plans for a group of Graduate Resident Directors (RDs). The AC will provide leadership for the RDs by assisting them to create and manage living/learning experiences for all students living in diverse communities, providing direct oversight for the first year area. The AC will also coordinate two living learning programs, serving as an integral connection between faculty and the residence life staff. The AC will also provide support for central office functions and special projects as assigned.

The Area Coordinator is involved in the oversight and assessment of a comprehensive housing and residence life program for approximately 2100 students (Springfield College has a three year residential requirement for undergraduate students and we house 365 seniors and over 100 graduate students). The residential system currently includes 7 traditional halls, 3 suite-style apartment areas, 27 houses and 13 apartments.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, select, train and provide ongoing direct supervision, development, and feedback for 2-4 graduate resident directors (RDs) and 4-5 undergraduate resident assistants (RAs)
  • Provide administrative leadership and oversight for the first year residential area, including occupancy management, damage billing, and program budget management
  • Directly responsible for the development of a community housing approximately 110 residents
  • Work with the full complement of housing and residence life staff to create, implement and assess a residential engagement model and two Living Learning Communities with appropriate developmental outcomes for assigned residential area
  • Support and serve as a resource for RDs and RAs to create and implement educational, cultural, and social programs that are relevant, innovative and responsive to the needs to students in alignment with the goals of the living learning communities and our college mission, in conjunction with RDs
  • Provide ongoing assessment, approval, and oversight of program proposal documentation for out-of-the-classroom program planning and implementation by community members, residence life staff, and academic partners, in conjunction with RDs and Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life
  • Provide ongoing review of learning outcomes and goals established for each of the living learning communities, and assist the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life in the implementation and interpretation of program assessment activities
  • Serve on departmental and college-wide committees, including the Living Learning Community Advisory Committee, among others, depending on area of assignment
  • Facilitate communication between academic personnel (faculty, staff) and residence life staff
  • Market opportunities available in living learning communities to incoming/returning students and their families, and provide recommendations for improving the quality of services and programs in the communities
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of graduate assistant training and/or resident assistant training, depending on area of assignment
  • Participate in the centralized on-call administrative duty rotation schedule and serve as first responder when emergencies occur
  • Coordinate and conduct room and building inspections, working with the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life and Facilities to ensure timely response to work orders
  • Work cooperatively with other campus offices including: All offices in the Division of Student Affairs as well as Facilities, Academic Affairs units, Public Safety, Admissions, etc
  • Assist with summer projects such as fall housing placement, summer housing, New Student Orientation (NSO) and staff training
  • Assist with campus-wide event staffing including Family Weekend, Admission Open Houses, etc.
  • Serve as a community standards hearing officer for incidents within residential communities
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities related to but not limited to the position.

Experience and Qualifications:

Master's degree in related field preferred, with a minimum of two years of live-in professional experience in housing and residence life. Experience with Living Learning Communities and academic partnerships; Experience with creating or implementing residential curriculum or student learning outcomes based programming models. Strong supervision and programming experience as well as communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and the ability to work in a team environment while handling a variety of administrative tasks are essential. Excellent organizational, problem resolution and customer service skills are a must. High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Proficiency with computer systems and software such as housing management software, student management software, etc. and MS Office Suite. Ability to pass background check.
