Full-time, year round full-time position, salary commensurate with experience.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Community Standards administers, and manages relevant aspects of Amherst College's student conduct and community standards programs, policies, and procedures. The Director works closely with the Senior Associate Dean of Students, members of the faculty, Class Deans, colleagues in Student Affairs and other professional staff, administrators, student leaders and organizations, Campus Police, and legal counsel in maintaining, communicating, and promoting strong community and ethical standards for on-campus learning and living at Amherst. The Director will administer the Amherst College Student Code of Conduct; advise students of their rights and responsibilities; investigate complaints of academic, behavioral, and social violations and impose sanctions for uncontested violations; refer cases to the Community Standards Review Board and coordinate hearings for adjudication as required; and serve on various committees as designated.

The Director takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Formal and Informal Behavioral Intervention

  • Serve as the chief conduct and disciplinary officer for Amherst College in all matters of student behavior.
  • Direct and manage overall operations of the student conduct system for cases of academic and non-academic misconduct.
  • Advise students of their rights and responsibilities in an effective, clear, educational, and developmental manner.
  • Investigate complaints of academic, behavioral, and social violations and impose sanctions for uncontested violations according to established Amherst College policies and procedures.
  • Refer conduct cases requiring adjudication to the Community Standards Review Board as appropriate and as specified in Amherst College policy; organize and coordinate hearings, and coordinate hearing board activities with campus constituencies as needed.
  • Work with, advise, and maintain clear communication with students, faculty, staff, and campus organizations, as needed, regarding complex legal, operational, and policy questions and issues.
  • Maintain meticulous records within the College's electronic records systems.
  • Review police reports and incident reports as provided by the campus community; work with the Senior Associate Dean of Students and staff in Case Management to ensure an appropriate and timely response to all incidents involving students.
  • Assist the Senior Associate Dean of Students in the development and thorough documentation, implementation, and consistent application of protocols, policies, and procedures to assure legal compliance, the maintenance of high ethical standards, and the use of best practices.
  • Maintain and communicate to colleagues up-to-date knowledge of generally accepted best practices, national trends, and research regarding student conduct, including community and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support student, staff, and faculty engagement in living/learning initiatives in the areas of intercultural learning, inclusion, and conflict resolution.
  • Work with professional and student staff in Residential Life, and more broadly with the student community, to create, articulate, and ensure accountability for strong community and ethical standards.
  • Provide support and assist professional staff to mediate, manage, and resolve critical incidents and conflicts within the residential community, providing referral assistance as required.
  • Be consistently and predictably available “on call” to respond when emergencies and crises occur after business hours.

Department and Campus Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other offices on campus, especially within Student Affairs, in the development and implementation of social and educational programs within the campus living/learning community.
  • Partner with the Chief Student Affairs Officer, Dean of Students, Senior Associate Dean of Students, Director of Student Activities, Director of Residential Life, Class Deans, Campus Police, General Counsel, as well as colleagues within the faculty and Student Affairs to develop and implement a unique, distinctive living/learning experience for all Amherst students that supports and advances the College's academic mission.
  • Serve on various committees as designated by the Dean of Students



  • Master's degree in higher education administration, educational leadership, student development, counseling, or a related field.
  • Five years of pertinent experience in higher education, including progressively greater levels of responsibility and accountability. Three of those years must include professional experience in a student conduct office.
  • Experience working with student academic and non-academic disciplinary policies and processes in higher education; a substantial part of that experience must have been in a residential setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and Massachusetts laws, regulations, policies, and best practices affecting student rights and privacy and data collection and reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of college student development theory and practice.
  • Robust understanding of academic priorities, the educational mission of institutions like Amherst, and ways in which on-campus living/learning communities and functions can promote student engagement, advance student learning, and contribute to achieving desired learning goals.
  • Demonstrated effective administrative, supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong skills in written, verbal, and electronic communication, including the effective use of social media.
  • Evidence-based commitment to supporting a diverse student community.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other student life professionals and members of the faculty in the College community.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, exhibit resiliency under pressure, set priorities, achieve goals, assess complex situations, render fair judgments, and maintain strong ethical and professional standards.
