Visiting Hunter Recruitment Specialist (2 positions)
The Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) seeks two (2) individuals to provide support with the development and maintenance of a new statewide science-driven hunter recruitment, retention, and reactivation program in Illinois. This program is a collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). The positions are full-time grant funded and will be based at INHS on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
The following positions will focus on: 1) deer/turkey/upland game hunter recruiting, and 2) waterfowl hunter recruiting. Please indicate in your cover letter which focus group you feel you are most qualified.
Duties of recruiters include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and refine curriculum specific to workshops, including educating participants of varying age groups on the heritage and importance of hunting, game species behavior and ecology, hunting equipment, wildlife and hunting laws, accessing and scouting hunting lands, and post-harvest preparation of game.
- Network and collaborate with IDNR Wildlife Division staff, local governments and non-governmental organizations, and hunters to advertise and conduct workshops.
- Locate and schedule venues in Illinois to hold hunter workshops.
- Recruit experienced hunters to serve as mentors to new hunters.
- Demonstrate to and assist workshop participants with shooting firearms and/or archery equipment at target ranges and in actual hunting activities.
- Travel to various localities in Illinois will be required for several days at a time.
Recruiters will be supervised and report to the program lead scientist at INHS. Because these positions will be working with minors, the University of Illinois conducts criminal background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer.
Qualifications - Required
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife ecology, wildlife management, conservation, recreation or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position.
- Experience with wildlife management practices and hunting specific to position applying for, and the capability to educate others on these topics.
- Strong leadership abilities and the capability to organize, plan and manage workshops statewide.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills needed to network and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff, collaborators and the public.
- Evidence of strong communication skills.
- Knowledge and ability to develop and provide clear and effective activities and written and spoken presentations to large and demographically and culturally diverse groups.
- Proficiency in MS Office software (Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and ArcGIS.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must have or be able to obtain a FOID card and hunting licenses.
Qualifications - Preferred
- Master's degree in wildlife ecology, wildlife management, or a related field.
- Background in teaching, curriculum development, and experience presenting to demographically and culturally diverse groups.
- General knowledge of Illinois landscape, hunting laws and culture, and game species ecology.
- Familiarity with IDNR goals and program development, including a familiarity with the Illinois Wildlife Code, Illinois hunting regulations, and regulatory schemes (site hunts, private land hunting, put-and-take, etc.).
- General knowledge of Human Dimensions of Wildlife research.
Salary: Positions are full-time grant supported at an annual salary of $37,500, plus benefits. We anticipate annual renewal based upon satisfactory progress in the position and continued funding. The preferred start date is 16 April 2017, but this is somewhat flexible.
