Reporting to the Director of Enterprise System Administration, the System Administrator will be responsible for the management of various systems and applications within Network and System Services. Duties may include server administration (Windows, Linux, VMWare), system development and integration, management of server hardware environments, and oversight of multiple core service offerings. This position works closely with faculty, staff and students in a collaborative manner to support various academic, research and healthcare needs across the institution. This position plays a major role in supporting core infrastructure and department specific services across various colleges and business units at the University. The system administrator will act as the primary point of contact for major platforms and will work as a team member with other system and network administrators responsible for the day-to-day operation of the server and network environments.
About Network and System Services:
Rowan University’s department of Network and System Services is responsible for the end-to-end management of all University owned network, server and storage infrastructure. This includes over four hundred Windows servers, two hundred Linux servers, and multiple vSphere clusters supporting a wide array of applications and services utilized across all academic and administrative units within the University.
General Responsibilities may include: Participate in the design, implementation, and maintenance of the University’s Windows, Linux, and/or vSphere infrastructure and associated environment supporting the academic, research and administrative goals of the institution. Participate in the definition and implementation of system components including servers, hardware, software and upgrades supporting research and operational tasks. Design, develop and implement various integrations between a wide variety of infrastructure services targeted to improve efficiency, functionality and effectiveness. Provide broad-based application and server support and troubleshooting. Create and maintain system documentation, operational procedures, architectural documentation and hardware / software / service inventory. Propose and implement enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of all systems and services in accordance with industry best practices. Rapidly deploy approved fixes in response to newly identified stability and security threats. Proactively monitor systems and alerts, using industry recognized tools to avert troublesome trends as they develop to ensure a stable production environment. Plan and implement system changes and adjustments in a way that maximizes system availability. Formulate and monitor policies, procedures, and standards. Provide reports and metrics as needed to support requirements analysis and growth planning. Participate in compliance activities that include log collection, analysis and reporting. Participate in the organization’s change management process. Troubleshoot, analyze and resolve system issues, documenting problem resolutions. Provide 24x7 on-call systems support when necessary. Respond to escalated system support calls, resolve assigned tickets and document resolutions.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Professional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. Four (4) years’ experience in system administration, network administration or systems development in an academic or other large environment. Hands on experience with supporting enterprise infrastructure services, including Active Directory, Enterprise messaging, hypervisor services or other platforms. Working knowledge of networking, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPN technologies. Understanding of industry best practices surrounding proper maintenance and support of a 24x7 server infrastructure. Ability to think independently. Ability to analyze and solve complex problems. Ability to quickly grasp technical issues and offer solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Professional business demeanor.
Preferred Technical Skills: Advanced scripting experience in one or more of the following: Perl, Python, Powershell, Bash. Moderate to advanced SQL (MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server) experience. Experience automating services, processes and business functions. Experience installing/configuring/managing web delivery systems including LAMP/LEMP stack, Tomcat, JBoss, Jetty, and other Java servlets. Hands-on experience managing users in an LDAP environment. Hands-on experience managing and maintaining Single Sign-On (SSO) services including Shibboleth IdP, Shibboleth SP, Central Authentication Services (CAS), Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), Citrix Unified Gateway, or other SAML systems. Experience designing responsive front end web interfaces (Bootstrap/Foundation).
