Qualifications & Requirements:
- Successful candidates will have either a Master's or Ph.D. in a social science discipline and experience designing, conducting and publishing on applied mixed methods research interventions, preferably in occupational health and safety settings.
- Through explanation in a resume and curriculum vitae qualified candidates should show a record of applied research based on qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods. Initial job duties will include designing and/or executing research tasks in support of current projects, collecting both qualitative and quantitative data in field settings, participating in analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data sets and reporting study findings in presentation and publication formats.
- Successful accomplishment of initial job duties will open up possibilities to serve in roles including research task leadership, principal investigator opportunities and internal management roles.
- Potential candidates will be expected to travel up to 5 days a month to surface mines, underground mines and mineral processing facilities across the U.S. to conduct field based data collection in support of formative, empirical or intervention based studies.
- Starting salary between $49K-$72K based on knowledge, skills and experience.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research is actively recruiting behavioral scientists with experience conducting applied, mixed methods field research in industrial settings. These behavioral scientist positions are located in Pittsburgh, PA in OMSHR's Human Factors research branch. The Human Factors Branch (HFB) uses a systems approach to identify, characterize, mitigate, and respond to hazards, risks, and emergencies in the mining environment. This systems approach extends beyond the mineworker and includes all people in the mining organization that can influence Health and Safety (H&S). Through formative, empirical and intervention based applied research projects, HFB projects study H&S issues from two overarching perspectives; 1.) relationships and interactions within and around the organizational mine system, 2.) relationships and interactions within and around the mine emergency system. The current project portfolio includes studies on health and safety management systems, hazard identification and mitigation, situational awareness, technological development and integration, and self-escape and mine rescue. Outcomes resulting from HFB research include empirically based guidance, interventions, technologies and training in support of improving occupational health and safety in the mining industry.
