Executive Director of Career Development
Hollins University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Executive Director of Career Development.
Hollins has an unwavering commitment to a strong liberal arts curriculum, and believes it provides the foundation for success and the best preparation for any career. The university has a goal of creating a distinguishing career preparation program that attracts students and helps them achieve their post-graduation goals. To achieve these objectives, the university has received a $1 million gift to fund this new position to lead the initiative and to add programmatic funds. The executive director will be a key partner in advancing the goal of the university’s strategic plan to “prepare students for meaningful lives of leadership, civic engagement, and lifelong learning” by making the career program truly distinctive and best-in-class.
Reporting directly to the President, the Executive Director of Career Development will have responsibility for oversight of the university’s Career Center and its programs and services. He/she will work closely with the President on the definition, measurement, analysis, and implementation of Hollins’ strategic goal of creating career development programs that will engage students throughout their undergraduate education so that each alumna/i can find employment or attend the graduate or professional school of their choice. The executive director will manage the Career Center Director who supervises the Assistant Director and Assistant for the center.
The Executive Director of Career Development will:
- Oversee the expansion of the internship program to include summer internships and research opportunities, particularly in the sciences.
- Create the infrastructure for a formal alumnae/i career network that serves both undergraduates and graduates, where both internships and permanent employment opportunities are accessible to students and alumnae/i, and networking opportunities are provided.
- Expand professional career advising services for students, coordinate career advising with academic advising, and provide students with access to alumnae mentors.
- Articulate clear pathways for undergraduate student success in finding employment or attending graduate or professional school.
- Develop additional ways to promote a high-tech, high-touch Career Center culture that appeals to and engages every student.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a program to enhance students’ employability skills and preparation, and creates incentives to drive their participation.
- Secure additional employers and internship sponsors, including alumnae/i and families.
- Collaborate with the following campus leaders:
- Vice President for Institutional Advancement to ensure the success of the alumnae engagement campaign and to ensure that outreach to alumnae/i is seamless, successful, and well-coordinated between offices.
- Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Vice President for Finance and Administration and others on campus to ensure the sustainability of Career Center programs.
- Vice President for Academic Affairs and faculty to support student success in finding and preparing for internships, jobs, and graduate and professional programs.
- Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students to ensure that programs respond to the needs of students through co-curricular initiatives.
- Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing to effectively promote outcomes and Career Center programs to prospective students.
- Executive Director of the Batten Leadership Institute to ensure that career and leadership programs are coordinated.
- Provide leadership and oversight of the staff in the Career Center.
- Manage the Career Center budget.
- Contribute to the university’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, and ensure that Career Center programs are designed to advance these goals.
Successful applicants must have a master’s degree and a demonstrated track record of leadership in higher education, including the development, execution, and success of major initiatives in areas relating to careers and employment, with a minimum of five years of experience.He/she must have knowledge and understanding of undergraduate higher education administration and education policies and the advantages of a residential liberal arts education and experience, and abilities to articulate and advocate for a liberal arts education and connect the strengths of the liberal arts with the needs of the modern workforce.
Candidates must have the ability to define, measure, analyze, and implement initiatives, programs, and services (employer and university-wide outreach, events, etc.) in collaborative ways that facilitate student entry into careers and graduate and professional programs of choice.This include a clear understanding of the job market into which students will enter and the criteria for success in gaining employment or admission to graduate or professional school, as well as knowledge of online and mobile career resources and other tools associated with career exploration and networking.
The future Executive Director of Career Development must possess excellent leadership, supervisory, communication, interpersonal, collaboration, detail, accuracy, organizational, multitasking, project management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills and proven abilities to meet deadlines, make sound judgments, manage confidential and sensitive matters, and work effectively with multiple constituencies (faculty, staff, students, families, trustees, employers, alumnae, etc.). He/she must have the ability to build, enhance, and connect students to networks and relationships on and off campus; the ability to recruit, retain, and foster a team of able professionals; and demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.Applicants must also have the ability to travel domestically as needed via various modes including automobile (self-driven or car service), plane, and train; ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends; and valid driver’s license with minimal violations.Final candidates will be subject to credit, criminal history, and motor vehicle background checks.
Preferred applicants will have experience in a single-sex, residential, liberal arts higher education institution; experience in helping raise funds in collaboration with a college/university President and Vice President for Institutional Advancement (or similar position) for the continued development of results-oriented career programs and initiatives; and possess an existing network of employers.
