Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Open Heart Perfusionist is a valuable member of our team who operates a heart-lung machine while the surgeon operates on the heart. The perfusionist manages the physiological and metabolic demands of the patient while the cardiac surgeon operates on the heart.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence.


Duties of an Open Heart Perfusionist may include the following but are not limited to:

Required to operate all cardiopulmonary bypass equipment that is necessary for all surgical corrections of various cardiac and vascular abnormalities. Able to work independently under the general supervision of the M.D. Have strong communication skills. Must quickly recognize and instantaneously react to correct problems which may develop within the cardiopulmonary circuit and ancillary equipment. Maintain and operate pumps, IABP, cell saving devices and long term support devices and supplies is essential. Maintain perfusion supplies and equipment, run QC’s and collect data as necessary. This position requires mandatory oncall/recall on weekdays and/or weekends.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited perfusion training program or equivalent credits in an accredited graduate perfusion training program. Board Certified Eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Preferred Qualifications: Minimum of one year clinical experience.
