Position Summary: The Director of Security has primary responsibility for all security, safety and related functions of the Michigan State University Grand Rapids Research Center, a highly complex facility that performs cutting-edge research with regional, national and global partners. Initial responsibilities will include development of a comprehensive, needs-based plan for ensuring the physical safety and security of the building and its research and administrative faculty and staff; establishment of an emergency response plan; ensuring that contracted security personnel have the necessary experience and aptitude for the job, and that they receive appropriate training. The Director of Security also has responsibility for ensuring the effectiveness of the College of Human Medicine's physical security programs at all of its sites outside the East Lansing campus, including the downtown Flint site and the Grand Rapids Secchia Center where security managers provide day-to-day and general procedural oversight. Relying on significant experience and judgment, and working with the site Security Managers, the Director identifies metrics for assessing security programs at the various sites; compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to the security program; and creates periodic reports that analyze and assess security status. The Director serves as the key contact and point person for investigations involving security and emergency management and provides supervision and oversight of security staff at various CHM off-campus locations. The Director also serves as the main liaison with the MSU Police Department and local police and fire agencies (although may choose to delegate to the individual local Security Managers). This position is located at the Grand Rapids Research Center but travel to other CHM campus locations will be required.

Faculty: Minimum Qualifications Support Staff: Minimum Requirements Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in security administration, criminal justice or law enforcement; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures, including physical security, and in development, implementation and maintenance of related security protocols and procedures including video surveillance, card access and intrusion alarm systems; experience in supervision of other security professionals; experience in emergency response planning; computer and software aptitude, with an emphasis on word processing, spreadsheets, and power point presentation software; experience in budgeting and statistical data analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Desired Qualifications: Strong management and leadership skills together with excellent communication, influencing, negotiating and engagement skills; sound judgment and decision making skills, with a 'hands on', problem solving approach; strong commitment to security and safety policy and the ability to assess and identify potential threats and suggest mitigatory actions; ability to remain calm under pressure and take control of incidents; at least two years' experience in an academic, health care or research environment; knowledge of Clery Act reporting requirements and OSHA and Export Control compliance requirements; enthusiastic and committed approach with a track record of building strong, trusted relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
